Wether you and your partner attend the same college or school or if you are in a long distance relationship, relationships in college can be sometimes challenging. However, with that being said, they are also what keeps us going sometimes, having that constant support for one another. I personally am currently in a long distance relationship, and with the current state of the world, not being able to visit each other at our colleges and see each other as much we have before, we had to find some ways to be there for each other and make time for us.

The main and most important thing has been good communication. FaceTime is a life saver! It allows us to talk a few times a week and see each other’s faces. Even though it is still different from seeing each other in person, it is something that I look forward to a few nights a week to just sit and talk with each other as if we are almost in one place together. Texting throughout the day here and there is also really reassuring that they are thinking of you throughout their day. Something that we did at the beginning of the semester was send our schedules to each other so we know when the other person is in class or practice. All of these things are good, but I feel like the little special acts of kindness are what can really make distance easier and remind you how worth the distance is in the long run.

One little act of kindness that we both have tried is to just send random letters to the other person. Maybe put in a few pictures or a Polaroid of you guys just to make them smile when the letter arrives. I know for me personally it is really nice to be able to read that letter as many times as you want when you’re missing your person extra that day.

Another idea could be that you could watch a show or a movie together. One of the many great things to come out of the pandemic was that with Netflix you can watch shows or movies with other people and be able to talk with them. Even though it’s not as good as being together, it can be really comforting and you can still watch your favorite shows together even from a distance.

Lastly, I think that it’s just important for your person to know that you are making an effort to make time for them. A lot of times both peoples lives can get very busy, and with school especially it is easy to let the stress take over. But, I think that simple things like good morning and good night texts go a long way. Again FaceTime is the biggest lifesaver! Planning a day or a date of when you’re going to see each other next is also a really good idea. It allows you both to have sometime to look forward to and having an “end date” helps get you through days where you just miss them a lot. All of these things are just little reminders to show the person you are with that you are thinking of them and care about them all the time even from a distance.
