Overcoming Breaking out in an Age of Masks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Monmouth chapter.

It is a no-brainer that the implications that came with the COVID-19 pandemic were not what anyone was expecting. With all the new precautions and guidelines that have been set in place, it has become a mandate that people are required to wear face masks in most situations. This includes around people, in public locations (inside and out), and various spots. With this new guideline, in order to ensure the safety of ourselves and those around us, masks have become of our lives. Unfortunately, due to these new standards, one of the problems people are beginning to face is the worsening of their skin an increase in breakouts.

The newest question is “how do I take care of my skin in the age of masks?”

When it comes to preventing breakouts during the age of wearing masks, one of the essential things is to make sure you take preventative steps. The first thing in this is to make sure you have an effective and efficient mask. Make sure that the mask it’s not too tight but also not too loose. There needs to be enough space for a certain amount of airflow in order to let your skin breathe. Make sure that in the morning and every night before bed that your skin is clean as well as moisturized. This will help cleanse and maintain a balanced pH.

If you do not intend on taking off your mask, I would recommend not wearing makeup in that area because it blocks your pores and can increase irritation. It can also cause your mask to become dirty. In order you make sure that your mask is clean, I would make sure to sanitize it every day and wash it at least once a week. This will ensure the dirty particles that build up will be less effective in worsening your skin.

Secondly, there is the option of what kind of masks you choose to use during this time. There’ve been many companies that have developed masks better made in order to benefit and sustain the healthiness of one’s face. For example, the company Hanuk has generated masks that are reusable and have the unique feature of being able to replace the Nano filter within the mask. This is useful because most masks usually become ineffective after a day’s use. The recommended time a mask to be used is between 8 to 12 hours. This is usually one shift at work. Hanuk‘s masks give people the opportunity to machine wash their product in order to sanitize their masks yet not have to invest in bulks of non-reusable masks.

It’s clear to say at the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on everyone’s life some way. Nevertheless, with simple steps you are able to maintain your skin’s healthiness and make that one less thing to worry about.
