5 Lessons I’ve Learned From Distance Learning

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

Right now is an unprecedented time for all of us. Whether it be working from home, learning remotely or being quarantined, we are all facing new challenges in our lives due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a freshman in college, I was taken by surprise this past summer when all of my fall courses were moved to distance learning. I had just finished up my senior year through Zoom meetings and virtual celebrations and was looking forward to the freshman experience on campus. Despite my frustrations and anxiety about this change, I accepted the challenge and got ready for my virtual semester at home. Below are five lessons distance learning has taught me.

Grow Through What You Go Through

There are always going to be moments in life where we can’t have our goals met or dreams fulfilled. It’s hard to have a positive attitude when everything seems to go the opposite as you hoped, but try to remember that this experience is shaping you. It’s allowing you to adapt and overcome, therefore becoming a better version of yourself.

Start Assignments Early

If your classes moved online this semester, you have probably learned, like me, that starting assignments early is a must. Staying home with relatives can be distracting, and having professors who aren’t the best at teaching virtually is difficult, so it’s a good idea to start your assignments as soon as they are announced. Starting your work early ensures that you have plenty of time to get help or make revisions if needed.

Make Time for Self-Care

Having to learn a new way to take classes is hard enough. Then, with the added pressure of the pandemic, it’s safe to say that it’s a stressful situation for most. A self-care day is just what you need if you are longing for a break from the day-to-day hustle. Plan a day to do no work, have a fancy bath or shower, cook or pick up some food, and relax while watching a movie. I’ve learned that self-care days are extremely important to help maintain some calmness between the busyness of being a college student.

Enjoy the Little Things

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned from distance learning is to enjoy the little things. Although several of my plans and trips have been canceled, I try to look on the bright side and find the little, everyday joys to be thankful for. Whether it be laughing with family, finding my new favorite movie or trying a new hobby, appreciating the small things will help make this time a little more manageable.

Get Outside

It’s easy to take breaks from school by looking at your phone, but now that many classes have gone virtual, try taking your breaks outside. One of my favorite ways to absorb some rays is by placing my hammock outside or walking my dogs. Sitting in a chair for too long can be uncomfortable, so make sure to schedule some time away from the screen. Getting outside will help you break up your day and move your body!

Right now is a new and hard time for all of us. Take time to reflect on this past and what you’ve learned. The lessons I’ve learned through my experience with distance learning will help me for the rest of my college career. What lessons has distance learning taught you?
