5 Ways to Actually Accomplish Your New Year’s Resolution

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

This New Year’s Day, try to make a resolution you can keep. Here are five ways that you can actually accomplish your new year’s resolution.

Don’t set your goals too high

You can’t accomplish your new year’s resolution if you make an unreasonable goal. You have to make an actual goal that you can accomplish. It is completely okay to start small. Your new year’s resolution doesn’t have to be super big. Everyone is at different points in their lives and your goal should be for you. If you start small, you can start to accomplish and build from there. Just because you start small doesn’t mean you have to end small. Take baby steps.

Accept that it won’t be perfect

Don’t be so hung up on always being perfect and not making any mistakes. You will have days where you can’t keep your resolution, and that is okay. No one is perfect. You will have setbacks but you need to remember to not let go. Take each day at a time, and don’t be hung up on when you mess up. If you keep going and keep trying you will succeed.

Keep track of your progress

It will be hard to keep your goal and make progress if you don’t keep track of your goal. It could be a note on your phone or a journal, or it could be as easy as making tally marks. A year is a long time to recall by memory. If you keep track of your goal, you can see your actual progress, and that can further motivate you to keep going and make more progress.

Be specific with your goal

If you make your goal super-specific, then you can take specific steps to accomplish it. If you make your goal too generic, then it could be more difficult to accomplish it. If your goal is to lose more weight or drink less, you don’t have an actual number that you can reach. If you make your goal quantitative, then it’s an actual thing you can accomplish and can take steps towards.

Set yourself up for success

Think positive thoughts and believe that you can do it! If you are hard on yourself and are negative, then you will create a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure. Make it easier for yourself, do your research and find people that will support and help you. Start strong, and find ways to keep yourself from burning out. Whether that is starting off small or rewarding yourself, make sure you keep going.

If you fail, it is okay. You can restart or change your goal at any time. New year’s resolutions are a thing, but you can still make goals and better yourself all year long. Just follow these steps and stay positive.
