Since the pandemic, I’ve found it hard to occupy myself. I felt like I was spending every minute of the day in class or in bed, with the occasional date with friends or my boyfriend. This unproductive behavior made me even less productive. I felt like my brain cells were dying from inactivity. This is when instead of reading a book, I downloaded TikTok because TV in bed just wasn’t enough.

Through the app I found my first hobby: knitting. Kind of. Without the needles. I came across a video of a chunky yarn blanket and it looked so soft. Conveniently, my boyfriend and I had developed a habit of swapping blankets since he had some that I loved and vice versa. This seemed like the perfect thing for me to learn.

I took a trip to michaels and bought 6 balls of chunky yarn. I knit my boyfriend my first blanket ever (which he loves!), helped my friend knit her first blanket (which she loves!), and am knitting a blanket now for my niece who will be here in just a few weeks.

*Author’s Note: This post was written a few weeks back. My niece was born today, 3/22!

As if this new skill weren’t enough, I took up baking and immediately fell in love. It’s become such a great creative outlet that I’ve even gotten supplies for Christmas and my birthday. I’ve since made multiple cakes and cupcakes of different flavors and designs trying to master the craft. Unsurprisingly, I am very impatient in learning the techniques and wish that with the amount of baking videos I watch I would magically be able to perform these techniques overnight. That’s not the case unfortunately, so although I am on a baking hiatus after a bad baking weekend, I will continue to practice when I can. Until then, I’m on the hunt for the best buttercream recipe. I’ll let you all know when I find it!
