5 COVID-Safe Activities to Add to Your Summer Bucket List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Virginia Tech chapter.

With summer vacation just around the corner, it’s very likely that we’ll still be following safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID. Although it may seem that there won’t be much to do after all that we’ve done during quarantine, this summer can still be filled with fun and exciting activities — all COVID-friendly. Check out my top 5 summer bucket recommendations that can be done in Blacksburg — or anywhere else your heart desires!

Go Camping

As the weather warms up, what’s better than getting together with your pod and heading out to your local campgrounds? This summer, make sure to enjoy the open air at a socially distanced get-together. Grab your s’mores and gather around the fire. If you’re looking for places around Blacksburg, check out Jefferson National Forest, Wind Rock, and Grayson Highlands State Park.

Try a New Hairstyle

While some of you may have grabbed those scissors or hair dye during quarantine, the summer is a great time to try out a new style. Whether it’s cutting a few inches off or dyeing your hair pink, summertime is the perfect time to try something new with your hair.

Support Your Local Farmers Market

Grab your favorite mask and head over to your local farmer’s market. Not only are you supporting local businesses, but you’re also getting the freshest foods, helping protect the environment, and connecting with your community. If you’re in Blacksburg during the summer, check out the Blacksburg Farmers Market on Wednesdays from 12 pm to 6 pm or Saturdays from 8 am to 2 pm.

Head to a Drive-In Movie Theater

Want to watch a movie and try something new? Pick up your pod and head to a drive-in movie theater. A drive-in theatre offers the perfect combination of a movie experience with socially distanced opportunities. Check out your local drive-in and see what movies they’re playing for a grand time.

Take a Road Trip

Pack a bag, grab your pod, and head out. Summertime is the perfect time to get out of your comfort zone and see something new. Whether it’s an hour away or seven, taking a road trip to a new place is a fun way to spend your summer vacation. If you’re looking for places to go in Virginia, make a trip to Floyd for their farmers market, Virginia Beach for some fun in the sun, or DC for museums. If you want out of Virginia, check out nearby states for some extra fun!

This summer doesn’t have to be a bummer just because COVID is still around. Make sure to find ways to keep yourself active and COVID-safe this summer. Remember: keep your mask on and have fun!
