When women come together, they can create positive and lasting changes amongst their communities and their peers. At the same time, those who initiate change and make a difference can feel empowered, and this is what many clubs and organizations accomplish at NC State. There are so many organizations on NC State’s campus geared toward women and their empowerment which can ultimately make the women at NC State feel amazing. Here are just a few of those organizations that accomplish this.

IGNITE at NC State

IGNITE is a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization that works to empower women in politics, boost civic engagement, fight for political parity, and foster community change through civic engagement resources and access to networks of powerful women in politics. IGNITE is an excellent way to get connected with women political leaders and to learn more from them. For example, IGNITE recently hosted a Meet the Mayors event with the mayor of Asheville and the mayor of Chapel Hill, and it was so helpful and amazing to hear more about these women and their experience in politics. On top of that, IGNITE holds general body meetings to connect with their members and to learn more about them. If you have an interest in politics or feel it’s important to empower women in politics, IGNITE is the club for you.

The Feminist Collective of NC State

The Feminist Collective elevates and supports preexisting gender equity and social justice-related clubs and organizations on NC State’s campus that advocate for and embody feminist principles. This organization creates a space that allows NC State students to connect, collaborate, and create. The club holds multiple events ranging from book circles to Full Moon Fiestas which are events intended for self-care and new beginnings. This club is especially great for those connected to feminism and for those a part of another social justice or gender equity organization on campus. FemCo is always open to collaborating with these organizations and promoting their events in their newsletter or Instagram. FemCo is definitely the club for those women who want to feel empowered and connect with other women.

Period @ NC State

Period @ NC State is a university chapter of the international organization Period which works to fundraise for a local partner organization to then distribute menstrual products to homeless populations. This organization also educates NC State students about menstruation to minimize the stigma surrounding menstruation while also advocating for women everywhere. Period @ NC State is a great organization to join for those who care about women’s issues and want to make improvements in their community. Those who join this club can make a real difference in the lives of many women who struggle with dealing with their periods.

Girls Engineering Change

Girls Engineering Change is an organization whose mission involves showing girls that they can change the world through engineering, and they do this through hosting 1.5 to 2-hour workshops. These workshops involve male and female college engineering students assembling small engineering devices with youth aged 8-14 from the Triangle area. Their devices range from calculators, solar-powered USB chargers, and so much more! They donate every kit they make to further emphasize the importance of empowering young girls who are interested in engineering. For example, the solar-powered USB chargers go to the Red Cross’s emergency disaster relief kits or the calculators are donated to schools in Africa. This is a great club for women engineering students and those interested in empowering the next generation of women engineers.
