As students at the University of Washington, we’re all probably familiar with the unpredictable nature of Seattle weather. But, in the winter months, it’s no doubt that the weather gets cold – especially if you’re from out of state and have never experienced a Seattle winter. Along with the colder temperatures, you can expect significantly more rain, which is not the best if you have classes all the way across campus. If you are looking for some quality staples to add to your wardrobe this winter quarter, you have landed in the right place. These five wardrobe essentials focus on rain proofing, layers, and comfort so you can be warm and cozy this winter quarter without being cold or drenched in rain.

1. Puffer jacket (with a hood)

There are a few feelings worse than freezing on your way to class because your jacket isn’t warm enough. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. A puffer jacket is truly a game changer because they keep in your body heat and are often water-resistant. Not only are they super versatile, but they’re also fun to wear too! Everyone on campus has been loving Aritzia’s The Super Puff™ but Amazon has tons of affordable options too!

2. Knit sweaters

Knit sweaters are the epitome of winter clothing, and they can also be worn year-round (a huge plus!). Knit sweaters are perfect for layering and come in a variety of styles and colors, so you’ll definitely find a piece that’s right up your alley. I personally love the sweaters at Abercrombie & Fitch, but you can find similar affordable pieces in Old Navy and Amazon!

3. Leggings

Let’s be honest, most days on campus often consist of comfortable outfits and stretchy, moveable fabric. And what else screams comfort more than the perfect pair of leggings? Not only are they perfect for layering, but they go with pretty much everything, making them a staple for this winter. My favorites are the Aerie High Waisted Flare Leggings and the Lululemon Wunder Under High-Rise Leggings

4. Boots

When it comes to footwear, I tend the gravitate towards useful pieces that keep me warm and dry, all while making my feet look the best! Rainboots are a must, and I love these ones from Target – they’re affordable and do their job well. And for boots that keep you warm on the coldest days, I recommend the Ugg Classic Mini Boot

5. Earmuffs or Beanies

Finally, don’t forget that your head needs just as much warmth as the rest of your body! To keep my ears warm, I love wearing earmuffs and my Timberland Cable Beanie. Not only do they prevent earaches, but they’re super cute too!

I hope these wardrobe essentials help you stay dry and cozy throughout these next few months. Have a wonderful winter quarter and stay warm!
