Starting college isn’t the easiest process. There’s a million questions and not enough answers about what to bring and what not to bring when moving into a new space. Here are five items that should be on your list when you transition into college dorm life:

1. Shower Caddy

A shower caddy is a small basket you can take with you to the bathroom that holds your body wash, shampoo, conditioner, face cream, or other shower essentials. When you live in a dorm, it’s important to maximize your space by eliminating clutter and a caddy will do just that as you go to and from the bathroom. When carrying all that you need, things may fall and germs can be collected, which can cause you to get sick. A shower caddy will stop any clumsiness or accidents from happening as well. Here’s a tip; get flip-flops or shower shoes for when you enter your shower. Although you may be a clean roommate or suitmate, there’s no telling about the people you may be sharing that with as well as the thoroughness of the cleaning staff. It is better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to hygiene.

2. foam mattress Cover

With the stress and worry that comes with being a college student, the last thing you should have to worry about is if the bed you’ll be spending the next 9 to 10 months in is uncomfortable. Not all beds are the same or to your preferred level of comfort. A foam mattress cover is extremely comfortable and can help you adapt to a new environment. At SUNY Plattsburgh, the beds in each dormitory are different. Some are hard, and others are soft. When buying bedding and pillows for your room, consider getting something that will fulfill your level of comfort. This will be the bed you sleep, eat and hang out in, so it’s important to establish support now before being gravely uncomfortable later.

3. Fan

Although Plattsburgh can be extremely cold at times, living in the dorms can get very humid. It is important when changing environments to be as comfortable as possible. College can become your home away from home, and it’s not the best to wake up drenched in your own sweat because of the heat. Here’s another tip; if you are someone who needs noise or a light on to fall asleep, the fan will help keep a constant noise in the background. Plattsburgh is a quiet environment and if you aren’t used to the silence at night, a fan will definitely smooth your transition into dorm life.

4. Kitchen set

A kitchen set is important to have when you need it. Whether it’s pots and pans or even tupperware, you never know when you’ll want to eat something besides campus food or miss home cooked meals. If you are vegan, vegetarian or on a specific diet, having your own supplies will allow you to make food you are more comfortable eating. Also, if you are an international student, this will also be a good way to keep your culture with you even when you are studying abroad. Having a kitchen set can enhance your college experience because it will keep you connected with your favorite types of food.

5. Medical equipment

Medical supplies are a must when going to college. From band-aids to over the counter medication, medical supplies are important to have on any campus. It’s a necessity to be prepared just in case the worst happens. Being sick and far from home can be overwhelming, but with a health kit you will have the medicines you need and not have to worry about going to the health center alone. You won’t have to go to a pharmacy when you have the flu or some kind of sickness.

Whether you are close to home or far away, necessities for college are always a stressful thought. But, having a head start can make it easier to shop around. Making a list of what you need to pack before starting the packing process can minimize the amount of unnecessary items you bring, as well as your stress level. Prevention is better than undoing the damage done.
