Two weeks ago, my roommates and I were able to see our fellow roommate, Katie, in the cast of You on the Moors Now at Denison University. Any student is able to be a part of the two plays Denison puts on per semester. While Katie is a theater major, she shares the stage with fellow performers with fellow majors, minors, and others who just want to participate in theater.
As Katie is a senior now, she is becoming more knowledgeable and secure when it comes to her work in theater, especially at Denison where she had been a part of the program since her freshman year. By now, she has found her niche and loves to be challenged which she gains a lot in her theater classes. In Katie’s experience during You on the Moors Now, she got a great mix of gaining more knowledge and experience on the stage, while also being able to have fun with her friends.
You on the Moors Now is a play that is a feminist and bit of an eccentric take on the romances from four beloved and classic novels, Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, and Jane Eyre. While I was the only one of my roommates who was familiar with all four novels (English majors vibes over here), everyone was able to follow along and enjoy the play. And it was wonderful to see Denison Theater Department representing voices that are not always displayed the best in the classics. But of course, our favorite part was watching our roommate!
But getting tickets was not easy. Nearly every night, the little theater was sold out! It’s wonderful that so many people love to come to see the performances to support their fellow friends and classmates. However, I think there is something to be said about Denison not providing enough seating for the demand.
Nonetheless, we all had an amazing time and it was wonderful to see such amazing performers- some experienced and some not displaying new and interesting shows. I always find it fascinating when Denison does more unconventional plays as it broadens the perspective of both the audience and the students on what a play can be.
