Here in Boston, it gets pretty darn cold. This winter in particular, we’ve been blasted with snowstorm after snowstorm and plenty of days where the windchill brought the temperature well below zero.

As a Boston resident with thin, California blood, I’m all for layers, bundling and even a few winter accessories that aren’t exactly stylish. Knee-length tundra coats, thick knit scarves and snow boots may not be the prettiest, but they do their jobs well and lately, the weather has totally merited them.

But these hats I’ve seen popping up on campus lately have left the necessary and practical category and gone in a whole other direction. Whether your 8 year old cousin owns one of these things or you’ve just seen them bobbing around the city on the heads of various tourists, these knit animal hats are a trend that’s hard to miss. I’ve seen girls sprouting frogs and pandas – I even saw a husky (possibly for Northeastern pride?) a few weeks back.

Now is it just me, or do these poor baby animals belong somewhere else other than on a sensible 19-year-old’s head? They may be cute when you’re two and still being pushed in a stroller, but if you’re earning a college degree, something tells me you can invest in a beanie that’s just as warm and a tiny bit more stylish.

I’ll give in and say that they’re pretty funny, but not necessarily in a good way. At least not in my opinion. So what are your thoughts? Yay or nay to wearing an animal face on your head?
