Breaking Down Kate Middleton’s First Public Post-Baby Ensemble

To say we keep tabs on Kate Middleton’s fashion statements is an understatement. As fashionistas, it’s only customary that we stalk, analyze, and inevitably swoon over every fashion choice the Duchess of Cambridge makes. After welcoming Prince George Alexander Louis into the Royal family, trendsetters wondered how Middleton’s style would change now that she’s a new mom.

Only five weeks after giving birth, Prince William’s wife made her first public appearance in Paige skinny jeans, LK Bennett wedges, and a tank top from Zara. As a finishing touch, Middleton added a fitted Ralph Lauren jacket to her ensemble.

Once thing’s for sure: this outfit put the ever-so-tragic “mom jeans” to shame.

We look up to Middleton for a number of reasons, one of which being her fairytale romance makes us believe we can also be modern-day versions of Cinderella (we’re waiting for you, Harry). Sartorially speaking, her ensembles always have a down to earth message. Though Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton may have designed her gorgeous wedding dress, Middleton never fails to look polished while rocking finds from “high street stores.” Translation? What the Duchess wears isn’t a mere fantasy to us unroyal style savants. Whether you’re a new mother like Kate or fashion-obsessed collegiette, her clothes are accessible, realistic, and serve as true inspiration to all.

Don’t fret, trendsetters: the Duchess’s “new mom” ensemble is also collegiette-approved. Give this outfit an campus-friendly twist by swapping the wedges for a polished pair of ballet flats—we’re loving these Nine West kicks ($40). Couple your favorite skinny jeans with this cropped jacket from H&M ($25). Unfortunately, the Zara top is no longer on sale; however, this Pleione tank top is a great alternative ($39).
