Future Elle Canada Editor in Chief: Sabrina Atzori

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at York U chapter.

Tuna with plain cream cheese that has been slightly warmed topped with pickles, on a plain rice cake. This may not tickle your taste buds, but for Sabrina Atzori, it’s a guilty pleasure. And while she may be gluten intolerant, she splurges every now and then on Doritos, brownies and doughnuts.

Sabrina Atzori is an English major at Glendon, and she intends to graduate with honours in 2017/2018. This year, she exemplifies inter-college love as an editor and writer for Vanier College’s student newspaper, The Vandoo, and a Lean In Event Coordinator for Glendon.

This is Sabrina’s first year taking courses at the Keele campus and she is currently enrolled in WRIT 4701 Journalism Ethics with Professor Andrea McKenzie. She recommends taking this course because while the course texts can be a tad dry, the content is super interesting!

“The class discussions are fun and interactive and Andrea is a great prof. She is smart, seems a bit tough, but is fair. I really enjoy listening to her during class and you learn a lot about various news sources. I was never a “news junkie,” before I started this class, but I’m really into the topics!”

Outside of school, when she’s not doing homework or working as a sports monitor, Sabrina likes to balance her social life between time for herself, and time with friends. She admits that her favourite song at the moment is “Single Yuh,” by Vybz Kartel. “I love a lot of his stuff, but it’s just the right amount of slow and has a good beat,” she explains.

After her undergrad, Sabrina is contemplating post-graduate studies followed by a part-time job and internship with a magazine. While she is aware that she needs to gain experience before anything, Sabrina has a vision of what she would like to do as a career. “I would like to work with a major magazine company one day, and dream to be the editor of a fashion magazine, so an internship would be great.”

Perhaps it may be no surprise that Sabrina is a reality show junkie. Friends would describe “Sab” or “Sabri” with adjectives such as, “crazy” “shameless” “loud” “funny” “independent” and “strong.” Despite her obsession with shows like Geordie Shore, Are You The One?, and Real World: The Challenge, Sabrina has insightful and inspiring advice for her first-year self.

“Love yourself and don’t doubt what you are capable of. TAKE BETTER NOTES and MANAGE TIME WISELY. If you have the time to read ahead and start assignments early, DO IT. Don’t be afraid to take breaks either. School is important, but it’s not everything. Your sanity and health are way more important…something I’ve really learned these past few months.”

Sabrina’s wisdom doesn’t stop there. Sabrina doesn’t leave her house without the essentials: water, EOS lip balm, and her iPhone. When asked what it means to her to be a student leader, she responds, “Being a role model for not only younger students, but students your own age as well. When you have the ability to make an impact in someone’s life, do it. Be a friend, say hello. To me, being a leader does not only mean doing things such as knowing how to delegate tasks for a school project or being the voice of an underappreciated club on campus.”

She continues, “To me, being a student leader means making a difference in routine, everyday life. Be the one on campus that is reaching out to others, holding the doors for students and professors. People will look up to you for your warmth and generosity. And if they don’t, that’s okay. At least you know you made that effort. Leading is about making an effort where and when you can.”
