The Struggles of Make-up

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at YCP chapter.

It’s most girl’s dream to have the perfect make-up look for every occasion. With our current technological age, makeup gurus can be found almost anywhere from YouTube to Instagram, making make-up goals seem almost attainable. Girls have slowly perfected their skills with expensive Sephora products sculpting the perfect brow and flawless foundation. Yet, the fact is even with all these resources make-up is still hard!

I have watched countless videos on doing makeup on YouTube from the perfect look for brown eyes to prom makeup and like most things on the internet the result is far from expected. Most of the time these seemingly perfect looks turn out clownish by my hand. I still can’t do winged eyeliner, I avoid non-nude eye shadow at all costs and my water line scares me! Foundation also is very confusing since finding the perfect shade seems almost impossible; it always seems to depend on the time of year and how tan I am (@donaldtrump). I’m constantly at awe by how people manage to have a flawless skin tone from a simple coat of foundation.

Most of the time when I wear makeup people cannot even tell. I always have wondered whether that is a compliment or not? I usually wear minimal nude tone eyeshadow, brown eyeliner (note: not waterline), mascara and blush if I remember. I also started using bronzer which I didn’t even know about until this year! While my makeup has slowly grown since I started wearing it in 9th grade, my skills have not improved much. My only real accomplishment has been curling my eyelashes since I literally used to think I was pulling my lashes out and it terrified me. Maybe makeup is one of those things where practice makes perfect, but from my experience some people are just naturally better at it.

So for all those struggling with makeup out there know you are not alone. Make-up has been getting a bad rep from social media as the natural look has been trending but, I still hold true to the belief that there is nothing wrong with a little make-up. Girls should embrace it and enhance their natural beauty. We have the opportunity to cover up unwanted pimples, guys don’t. Don’t waste that opportunity. As for me, I will one day learn to do my waterline without crying!
