The Old Taylor is Dead

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at YCP chapter.

I’m sure by now most of the world is familiar with Taylor Swift’s new song “Look what you made me do” especially considering the fact the song has over 350 billion views. When I first heard the song I wasn’t sure what to expect. I used to be a big Taylor Swift fan back in the day when she wrote heartfelt country songs. I loved her album “Fearless” and saw her during her Red Tour (which was amazing for the record). One thing I have never doubted is that Taylor Swift knows how to entertain. So it surprised me that when listening to her new song what I felt was anger.

Taylor swift used to be someone I looked up to. She pursued her career and made it at an early age and always stood up for what she believed in. But over the years she has lost her way and my respect. Her songs and life lately have been so centered on feuds and grudges, her actions are constantly centered on money and fame and in my opinion she lost her voice in her music. She doesn’t use her bad life situations to inspire but rather for revenge.

Her music video for “look what you made me do” is a direct jab at Kanye West. She even had depictions of snakes in one scene in reference to words exchanged during their past ordeal. She also as most know wrote “Bad Blood” about a dispute with Katy Perry over back up dancers. I am not saying I take any particular side in either of these exchanges, but I think the songs are rather shallow and a testament to Taylor’s character.

What has definitely caused the greatest reaction to Taylor’s new song for me among overs is the line she says in the bridge “the old taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh because she’s dead.” Taylor even went so far to make her point that she changed her entire instagram and added the line to her bio. All I can say is that I now realize that while disturbing that line couldn’t be more true. The old Taylor Swift is dead.
