#WhyIStayed taking over Twitter

As Americans, we often idolize celebrities, athletes, and political figures, thinking we have a direct relationship with them. The things they do become acceptable to society. Sometimes, however, things that celebrities, athletes, and political figures do cause such an upheaval to society that news stories capitalize from them and various movements are created.

Since the controversy of Chris Brown and Rihanna, domestic violence has been brought to light yet again after NFL star, Ray Rice, knock out punched his then fiancé, Janay. This topic and issue of abuse has taken over news channels and even sports channels for the past week. Rice, who is now married to Janay, was suspended from the NFL indefinitely as a result of his actions.

Awareness has increased this week via social media due to this controversy and #WhyIStayed has gone viral. This movement raises awareness about domestic violence and explain why and how a relationship with such a level of abuse could ever go on. #WhyIStayed was a trending topic on twitter Tuesday as woman from all over the world shared their stories of violence and abuse in hopes to raise awareness to young women in the future.
