9 Reasons Studying Sociology is Awesome

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVWC chapter.

As is turns out, learning about human behavior and social can actually be pretty interesting (and fun)! Here are just some of the many perks of being a sociology major.

1. You get to read really engaging books for class. I’m currently reading Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari and laughing my ass off.

2. You gain a whole new perspective on the world. This is a significant part of college, and sociology really pushes you to learn more about your surroundings.

3. You become more open to new ideas and concepts. It makes you realize how much there is to learn out there.

4. You get to learn about people, groups, and why they act the way they do. This comes in handy in the workforce.

5. Because sociology is so broad, you have many career options. Skills you learn in research, writing and communication are essential in all jobs.

6. Discussions in class are the best. They are very eye opening and inspiring.

7. You get to talk about media and pop culture and how they affect our behavior.

8. You learn to accept all people from all different backgrounds (race, gender, sex, heritage, etc.) You come to find that our “differences” are just socially constructed.

9. You find out how unfair the world can be. However, this causes you to take actions to change the world to make it a better place.

Even if you don’t major in it, I highly recommend taking at least one sociology course in your college career. The world is an amazing place; there is so much to learn about it and studying sociology is the perfect avenue to do so. Having an open mind will open many doors for you!

I enjoy writing for Her Campus, studying Sociology, cooking, and listening to music. I have an appreciation for learning about the world we live in and how to make it a better place for everyone.  I hope you enjoy my articles!
