The whole nation was shocked when the Mountaineers ran the scoreboard up to 70 against bowl game rival, Clemson, Wednesday night on ESPN. Twitter and Facebook were blowing up after the second quarter of the game by proud mountaineer fans all over the country. Trending on Twitter throughout the game were Tavon Austin and West Virginia, which attempted to shut out all of the doubtful predictions against the blue and gold. Needless to say, the other 83 percent of the nation who rooted against WVU hopped on the Mountaineer bandwagon by the end of the game, including ESPN themselves.
“Everybody doubted us, but you know, we came out on top,” record-breaking quarterback Geno Smith said in a post-game interview.
“West Virginia Drubs Clemson 70-33” was the chosen headline in the Huffington Post on Thursday and “West Virginia Crushes Clemson” in the Washington Post. Bowl game records were set by the Mountaineers, which will never be forgotten by WVU. The loyal Mountaineers who made the trip are now left with memories to last a lifetime.
Sophomore Anthony Cifre, who attended the bowl game, commented, “The game was beyond words. Honestly one of the craziest games I’ve ever been to. When Clemson made their first touchdown, my row full of mountaineer fans thought it was going to be a really long game. After seeing us score touchdown after touchdown it was an incredible feeling. It was epic, and I wish more Mountaineer fans came down to experience it.”
“It was the happiest time to be a Mountaineer. All the fans were cheering the whole time and didn’t leave until the very end of the game. It was definitely the best game I have gone to and an awesome experience,” said junior Jenna Cole.
All of the anxious students await the celebrations to come next week when the spring semester starts and everyone arrives back at school. The Orange Bowl left the Mountaineer nation with a smile on their faces and anticipation until the football season starts again in the fall. “It’s great to be a Mountaineer, where ever you may be…”
