Meet a Member of the WVU Dance Team, Alexis Florence

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Imagine trying to juggle your first year of college, being an Honors student, and being on the West Virginia University Dance team. For freshman Alexis Florence, it’s something she had always planned on doing.

How long have you been dancing?

  • I have been dancing since I was about four years old, so I am going on my fifteenth year of dance.

When did you realize you wanted to keep dancing in college?

  • I always planned on dancing in college in some manner, mostly because I couldn’t imagine not dancing after high school. It’s been such a major part of my life. I owe so much of who I am today to dance, and the creativity and discipline it instills.

         What’s your major?

  • My major right now is International Studies, and I plan to pick up a minor in Spanish sometime in the near future. Aside from my passion in dance I have always been interested in international affairs and politics, so after my undergraduate I hope to go to Law School. I’m also in the Honors program at WVU.

What was the process like for earning your spot on the dance team?

  • For try-outs I had to submit a video audition showing my skills that are required to be on the team as well as a solo. Waiting for the yes or no call was nerve racking! The Dance team is loaded with incredible talent and I’m so grateful to be a part of such an amazing team.

How has this experience been so far for you?

  • My experience already has been incredible and exceeded my expectations. We have already reached and surpassed many goals, one being receiving a Gold Paid Bid to Collegiate Nationals in Boston. We also placed first in Division 1A and named Best All Around Team!

Do you have any advice for fellow freshman?

  • I would tell them to stay organized and keep a planner; it’s the only way I keep track of my life on a day to day basis.

Be sure to watch the sidelines at football games and see the Dance team do their routines! You won’t want to miss this talented group.

I'm Chelsea, and I attend West Virginia University! I plan to major in strategic communications with an emphasis in public relations. I'm a lover of dogs, books, food, and Netflix. “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer." - Albert Camus
I am originally from Westchester, New York. I came to WVU for my undergrad in Strategic Communications with an emphasis on Public Relations and a minor in Sports Communication. My involvment on campus includes blogging for Her Campus, a sister of Alpha Phi, the assistant director of the media team on the Mountaineer Maniacs executive board and lastly, an athletic communications intern with the WVU Athletic Communications office. I will be graduating in May of 2017 and I am looking forward to getting started with my future career in Journalism and Public Relations!
