How to Keep that Summer Body through the Winter

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Chances are, your motivation to leave your house and go to the gym dwindles quickly as the cold months approach. If you are anything like me, you want to stay in shape during the winter time, but the snow and cold just make it that much harder. For those of you who don’t have a car or don’t like to drive in the snow, don’t panic; I have a solution for you. I have tried many workout DVDs and have found a few that I think are the best for keeping you in shape without leaving the comfort of your own home. All you need is floor space, a TV, and a DVD player! Weights are required for some of the workouts, but you can find them for as low as $4. The following four workouts are easy, fun and all under $25!

Abs

A.S.A.P Fitness Ab Lab with Paul Katami
$19.95 (price may vary)

This is a serious ab workout that leaves you feeling like you actually did work. While Paul uses a weight for the workout, it’s not necessary. This workout lasts about 30 minutes and has varying exercises to work the different parts of your abs.

Yoga

The Firm Power Yoga

$8.49 (price may vary)

I like to do this DVD on days where I’m feeling stressed or don’t feel like doing an intense workout. It is only 35 minutes and the instructor isn’t that annoying!  It also does not involve any weird yoga poses so anyone can do it. If done often, it really can help with balance and flexibility.

Cardio

Powerstrike 5 DVD with Ilaria Montagnani
$22.48 (price may vary)

To me, there is no better cardio than a kickboxing workout. The instructor is a little intimidating (yes, even through the TV), but her instructions are very easy to follow. You are constantly moving and sweating throughout the entire 60 minutes.  And don’t worry if you are not very coordinated; as long as you keep moving you will get a good workout.

Toning

Jillian Michaels: No More Trouble Zones

$7.16 (price may vary)

I have a love/hate relationship with this DVD. It is a really good workout, but it’s tough with all of the weight work. This is 50 minutes of constant, hard work. You will work your arms, abs, legs and all those places you never knew you had. If you do this workout consistently, you will really see results.

If none of these workouts interest you, you can always find a variety of different workouts On Demand if you have Comcast. Most of them are free and you can try different ones until you find one you like. Either way, these are the best ways to stay in shape without leaving your house.
