Addicted to the Cell

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

This past weekend, I found myself being yelled at for being too attached to my phone on numerous occasions.  I mean we’ve all been there, when something major is going on in your life and there’s just that immediate need for communication, or when your surroundings call for more human than phone interaction because something exciting is going on.

Well according to a new study conducted by researchers at Baylor University, college aged women are the worst offenders of chronic phone attachment. The study says that college gals average 10 hours a day on their phones, while men average 8…so that’s almost HALF of an entire day devoted to the digital world!

In fact, the study claims that this chronic attachment could be more of an addiction because subjects were reported to have withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and increased heart rate when their phones weren’t in sight.

Ever feel “naked” without your phone? Case and point.

So while it is pretty amazing that cell phones can function as computers, it’s also pretty amazing that they’re beginning to function as drugs.
