10 Things To Do This Fall Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WVU chapter.

Welcome back to WVU! As classes get underway, students and faculty are flooding the campus and making freshman feel at home. Although you may be drained of energy after starting off with Fall Fest, you may be wondering, “What can I do to get the most out of my fall semester?” In this blog, I will run you through the top 10 things you must fit in before finals week.

1. Join or start a club.
With over 300 clubs and organizations at WVU, there is something for everyone. There are numerous clubs for sports, languages, certain majors, and leadership. Being involved is a great resume booster and will keep you busy. If you can’t find a club or organization for you, start one! Whatever you can think of, there is most likely a club for it!

2. Go to WVUp All Night!
As an alternative to partying on the weekends, the university sponsors free, fun activities and giveaways at the Mountainlair going from 6 p.m. to midnight. Here, you can see movies, laugh at a comedy show, get free food and play games like bowling and billiards. It’s a great way to hang out, eat and meet people!

3. Take a walk on the Rail Trail.
If you like the outdoors, walking or running on the Rail Trail is a must! The trail expands along the Monongahela River and includes beautiful wildlife and forestry. It is a great way to relieve stress, exercise, or just kill time between classes.

4. Tailgate at the Student Lot before a game!
Go to the Student Lot three hours before a game to get pumped up to see WVU crush their opponents! With your student ID, you can get free food, enter in giveaways, and hangout with other students before a game. Tailgating here will assure you are ready to see WVU win.

5. See a show.
Most students have already knocked this off their lists after watching Colbie Caillat, Chiddy Bang, Big Sean, Mac Miller and 3 doors down rock out at Fall Fest, but if you missed it, there’s plenty of concerts and shows coming up. With the twangy country star Corey Smith, famous country crooner Vince Gill, and Italian singer Patrizio Buanne all starring at the Creative Arts Center, there’s a show for everyone!

6. Go to a non-major sporting event.

As it is always a blast attending a big football or basketball game, it is just as fun to attend another sporting event. This fall, make it a point to attend a soccer game, a volleyball game, or watch a cross country meet. At some games, concessions are only a dollar! The Mountaineer spirit is livelier than ever at smaller events, and students get free admission.

7. Explore Greek life!
WVU has 11 different sororities, and joining one can open you up to community service, business opportunities, and lifelong friends. With three leadership councils and over 1,500 students exploring Greek life, you can definitely find the one for you. Joining a sorority can give you experience for jobs and sisters for life.

8. Utilize the Rec!
WVU’s Student Recreational Center is free to all students and includes sports courts, a jogging track, weights, fitness machines, pools, and even a rock-climbing wall. Students can also rent outdoor equipment from the Outdoor Rec Center. The Rec offers group classes, trainers, and nutritionists to keep you at your healthiest while at school.

9. Experience High Street.

Downtown Morgantown has so much to offer and it’s all centered on High Street. Numerous restaurants and shops decorate High Street and it is always the place to be. Enjoy a milkshake, grab some buffalo wings, go dancing with friends, or get some campus gear; High Street has it all!

10. Last but certainly not least, have school spirit!
At WVU, we take great pride in our Mountaineers. No matter where you are, you’ll see WVU fans and hear “Let’s Go!” Take a picture with the Mountaineer statue, or attend a watch party and see our teams win big. This fall, you must take part in traditions, like singing “Country Roads” or doing a cheer at a game. Being a Mountaineer is an honor, and every student should be proud to represent blue and gold.

There are so many more things Morgantown and WVU has to offer, but if you hit these top ten, you’ll be in for an awesome year!

Devin is a sophomore at West Virginia University, class of 2013. She was a direct-admit into the School of Journalism as a freshman, where she is now majoring in Public Relations with two minors in Political Science and Professional Writing & Editing. Devin started her journalism career in Fairmont, WV. In high school, she served as the Editor-in-Chief of the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 Maple Leaves Yearbook, which went on to receive a Silver Medal in the Columbia Scholastic Program of Achievement. She was a columnist for her local newspaper, The Times West Virginian, for two years. During her senior year in high school, Devin was a columnist for a national magazine, Gladys, where she went on to become the Public Relations Manager. At WVU, Devin is a member of Chi Omega Sorority. In her spare time, Devin enjoys drinking skinny vanilla lattes, watching Saturday Night Live (re-runs, of course, because she is never home on a Saturday night), and buying cocktail dresses. When she grows up, Devin wants to be a lawyer.
