Keeping Christmas Traditions Alive

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Remember when mom dressed you up for pictures with Santa in that infamous, poofy dress with glittery bows that screamed “Christmas”? Oh, and it was accompanied by those itchy stockings that we all seemed to have a pair of. Or when the whole family took a trip down to the Christmas tree farm to cut down the perfect tree? During the holidays, traditions are what keep the Christmas spirit alive. Yes, we may be in a whole new millennium where Christmas trees range from white to pink. However, it just isn’t Christmas without some tradition. We waited 11 months to bring out the holly and mistletoe, so let’s not waste any time!

1.  O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree…

How lovely are thy branches…Don’t you love the woodsy fresh scent of pine trees? I DO! Start your Christmas traditions by getting a fresh Christmas tree. Take advantage of this opportunity and make a family trip out of it! Christmas time equals family time and there’s nothing better than sipping hot cocoa with your family on a farm filled with Christmas trees! Also think of all the Instagram pics you’ll get!!

2.  Deck the Halls

Haul out the holly, and don’t forget the mistletoe! Spreading Christmas cheer around the house is not very hard to do. First, plan a day where all the Christmas boxes are brought up from storage and begin to decorate the interior and exterior of your home. This is the only time of the year where it’s acceptable to go all out with all things Christmas! Hang up the stockings, put up the mistletoe, and let the Christmas magic begin! Nothing makes me happier than seeing whimsical snow globes, delicate Christmas trinkets around the house, and hearing George Michael’s hit, “Last Christmas.”

3. Popcorn. Cranberries. Thread.

Add some homemade charm to your Christmas tree with a popcorn cranberry garland. This old time tradition has been kept and passed down to many families over the years. First, you’ll need some supplies: cranberries, popcorn, thread or fishing line, a needle, and scissors. Start by washing the cranberries and toss the mushy ones. Next, make your popcorn. Tip: you might want to do this one or two days before and leave the popcorn out so that it becomes stale. Then thread your needle and tie a knot at the end of your string (be sure to measure string at desirable length). Thread a cranberry and push it to the end of your string. The pattern of the garland is up to you! (Personally, I put one cranberry and three popcorn kernels). To preserve the garland, spray shellac twice, or make it tradition to make a fresh one every Christmas.

4. Santa’s Coming to Town

Santa’s making a list and he’s checking it twice, he’s coming to find out who’s naughty or nice. Glam up and take advantage of the weekends or winter break to head down to Macy’s in Herald’s Square or at a mall near you to get your picture taken with Santa. As you read this you’re thinking…a twenty-something sitting on Santa’s lap…odd much? Maybe? But who cares! Do what you want, girl! Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too old to take a picture with Santa! You probably have been taking pictures with him since you were born, why stop now?

5. Channel your Inner Mrs. Claus

Santa runs on cookies, therefore I should too (my excuse for eating an unhealthy amount of cookies during Christmas time). Christmas calories don’t count, so gather up your family or your girlfriends and bake your hearts away this Christmas!

Tip: Ask for your Nanny’s recipes or look up Christmas cookies on Pinterest!

6.  Embrace the Cheesiness!

During the holidays, nothing makes your mom happier than letting her take your picture! Whether it’s a cheesy family photo by the tree at Rockefeller Center, or of you and your siblings with matching jammies on; suck it up and let her take the picture!!! You’ll be thankful to have those memories to look back on in the future.

7. Christmas Movie Marathon

Whether it’s the “Countdown to Christmas” on Hallmark or “25 Days of Christmas” on Freeform, pick a day to watch back to back Christmas movies. Make some popcorn, hot cocoa and snuggle up in your favorite blanket with your family or friends and enjoy some Christmas classics. Don’t have cable? Don’t worry, you can still get in the spirit with Christmas movies on Netflix or at a local Redbox.

8. Party Time!

Although a Christmas Ball sounds absolutely magical, not all of us have the means to throw one. Instead, plan a Christmas Cookie exchange party or a traditional Ugly Christmas Sweater party. Make it potluck style and have your guests bring a dish or bake cookies! There could be prizes for the ugliest sweater or the most creative cookie. Also, you could organize a Secret Santa or White Elephant game with your friends and family to spice up your party. Lastly, throw on your favorite Christmas tunes and have jolly good time!

9. Tis’ the Season of Giving

Instead of thinking about what you WANT this Christmas, think about what some people NEED this Christmas. It is so easy to lose sight of the real meaning of Christmas when it has become so commercialized. There are many ways you can give back and spread Christmas cheer this year! Many local organizations such as food pantries, soup kitchens, and animal shelters need help around this time of year. Furthermore, you can organize a holiday food, clothing, or toy drive in your neighborhood or at school to give back to families in need. Whether it’s a donation or volunteering a bit of your time, these small gestures are highly appreciated.

10. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The holidays are a perfect time to reflect on the year, but most importantly to spend time with the ones you love. Show how much you love and care for them with small gestures. For example, you can make their coffee or warm up the car for them. This Christmas, make it a goal to appreciate and devote time to being with family, friends, and significant others.
