DIY-Heart Back Shirt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WMU chapter.

I’m guessing we have all seen these cut-out heart-back shirts on Pinterest, or during an online shopping trip. When I saw it I instantly fell in love, and decided to make my own! Here is how to do it:

What you need: a T-shirt (get one that’s not tight, otherwise your heart might look distorted when you’re wearing your shirt), newspaper, chalk, fabric glue (I’m using Aleene’s Fabric Fusion), a plain piece of paper, scissors and these sequins that are stitched together (it looks like ribbon but it’s very narrow and easy to work with, I bought mine a Jo-Ann Fabrics).

Now take your plain piece of paper and fold it in half hamburger style. Then take your scissors and cut out a huge heart. Make it as big as you can, remember you can always make it smaller if you need to.

Lay your shirt completely flat; be sure to smooth out any wrinkles. Then lay your heart on top of your shirt. Now take your chalk and trace around the heart lying on your shirt.

Next, take your scissors and cut out your heart. Be really careful; make sure you don’t cut through both sides of your shirt.

Finally, put your newspaper between the two layers of your shirt. Then take your fabric glue and squirt a line of glue around the heart. Next lay the sequin ribbon on the glue.

Wait at least four hours before you wear it, and wait at least 48 hours before you wash your shirt. Don’t forget to have fun with your new shirt!

Katie King is a senior at Western Michigan University majoring in journalism and minoring in anthropology and gender and women's studies. This will be her second year writing for HerCampus and before that she wrote for the Western Herald. She also wrote for L7 women's magazine in the summer of 2012. In her spare time Katie likes to hang out with friends, watch reruns of old shows and talk about why Chicago is better than Michigan. When she graduates she hopes to move to New York with her tabby cat, Ellie and write for a fashion magazine. However, she changes her mind quite often so who knows where she will end up!
