20 Spring Trends Worth Following

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

My time at the London College of Fashion is winding down, and I want to take away as much as possible from this experience—intellectually AND fashion-wise.  This semester I have committed countless hours to fashion research (a.k.a. shopping), and I am here to bring you the top 20 trends for this spring/summer 2011.  What’s the best part?  All of these trends are VERY affordable, and you can find them in stores like Forever21, Urban Outfitters, Nordstrom’s, and online.

1. Harem Pants.  These pants are super trendy in London, especially with a pair of pumps or wedges.  However, let’s be honest—no one wants a saggy diaper-butt.  Forever21 has several optionsinspired by this trend that are more flattering.  This pair is only $24.90!

2. Pleated Skirts.  It’s time to embrace your inner “Catholic school girl!”  No, really.  This spring the pleats are very tiny and accordion-like—super girly.  This one from Urban Outfitters is $49.

3. Mom-Inspired Shorts.  I know what you’re thinking—“Oh my gosh, she’s lost her mind.”   This season stores like Urban Outfitters and Topshop are carrying real, vintage mom-jeans that have been altered into cute shorts.  They look great if you have the right donk for them.  Check out these from Urban Outfitters for $39.

4. Denim Button-Ups.  No longer reserved for “country bumpkins”, a denim button-up is the “new” cardigan.  Throw one over a sundress or even with shorts and a summer top.  Just remember—when mixing denim NEVER try to match the shades.   This one from Forever21 is $24.80.

5. Bright Neon Chiffon Tops.  These bright tank tops are best way to spice things up in a classy way.  Unlike cotton tank tops, chiffon or silk fabric will not pill and stretch out.  We all know how cotton tank tops look by the end of a long summer—a little too worn.  This one is only $10.50 at Forever21!

6. Skinny Belts.  No matter how big your belt loops are– skinny belts are IN.  I recommend a simple braided belt that goes with every outfit.  Here is one that comes with a skirt for $19.80 at Forever21!

7. Crochet Top.  Whether you’re heading to Jamestown Beach or your Organic Chemistry exam, these tops are a versatile trend.  Some London girls wear these alone over their bra, but I would HIGHLY recommend wearing a cami underneath.   This one is $24.80 at Forever21!

8. Tie Headbands.  These headbands are basically wires with scarves sewn around them.  You can either tie them into a cute bow or tuck the ends in like a normal headband.  Best part: They won’t slip off!  Unfortunately, I haven’t seen these in America yet.

9. Denim Vests.  These might remind you of Stephanie or D.J. Tanner from Full House.   But denim vests are the answer to getting extra coverage over a skimpy sundress or adding interest to a plain white tank top.  This one is on sale at Urban Outfitters for $24.99!

10. Wooden Sandals.  These 1970’s inspired sandals are so versatile and MUCH easier to walk in than normal heels.  They have a wider heel-base, and you can easily dress them up or down, depending on the occasion.   Check out these from Target for only $22!

11. Wedges.  These are probably the #1 most comfortable way to get that extra height in the summer time.   Wedges are the safest option for W&M ladies, because no one enjoys getting their heel caught in the cobblestones.   These Madden Girl wedges are $44 at Zappos.

12. Sailor Collars.  This innocent, yet flirty detail derives from the classic, nautical trend.  Keep the rest of your look simple without necklaces or large earrings.   This Forever21 frock is only $24.80.

13. Jelly Sandals.  Many of us have a special place in our hearts for this throwback trend.  Get them now, because it might be another 10 years before they come back.  These sophisticated jellies are $39 from Zappos.

14. High-Waisted Bikinis.  This trend isn’t for everyone, but it is certainly one to notice.   This style would look fabulous on a girl who loves vintage.  Check out this style for $78.89 at Asos.

15. Paper Bag Skirts.  Sorry, the grocery bags from Bloom won’t do the trick.  These skirts are ultra flattering, and MUCH more sophisticated than a ripped-up Abercrombie mini.   This one is $49 at Urban Outfitters.

16. Bib Necklaces.  When wearing these statement necklaces, please, keep the rest of your outfit simple!  Here’s one from Forever21 for $10.80!

17. Mid-length Skirts.  While these may look like you stole them from your granny’s closet, the longer hemline is actually one of the trendiest styles this season.  Not to mention, it’s going to be BIG next fall!  This one is $54 from Urban Outfitters.

18. White Denim Cropped Pants.  White pants are extremely impractical [for most of us], but it’s great for girls with a perfect suntan, nice legs, and plenty of luck!  These have a subtle pinstripe and are $24.80 at Forever21!

19. Floppy Wide-Brimmed Hats.   Hats are not JUST for Colonial Downs.  Wear this statement piece to Jamestown Beach or even walking around CW.  You’ll be sure to get some attention.  Get this steal for $10.80 at Forever21!

20. Summer Blazer.  Every girl needs a cropped, neutral blazer for summer.  Whether you’re an intern on the go OR an unemployed and looking for a job, a summer blazer is thekey to looking more sophisticated.   This one is $24.80 at Forever21!
