While some like to Netflix and chill, UW freshman Sophie Krakowski likes to Netflix and sew. As a native New Yorker, Sophie has always had a flair for fashion and an eye for detail. This past March, she finally put her talents to work and founded Iron and Thread, a unique and creatively altered patchwork-clothing business.

Tell us how Iron and Thread started.

On St. Patty’s Day I wanted to wear an outfit that was both trendy and comfortable. Unfortunately, I did not like any of the apparel available online or featured in stores near by, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. I ordered themed patches online and ironed them onto an old pair of jeans. Through out the day about 15 people asked me where I purchased my jeans, and I realized I was on to something.

What apparel have you designed thus far?

In only four weeks I have created jeans, jean jackets, hats, and shorts that are tailored to every customer’s personal preferences. I make sure to be in contact with every specific buyer to ensure that both the collegiate and non-collegiate patches I order from wholesale distributors in the garment industry blend together nicely and exceed their expectations.

Where do you see Iron and Thread going in the future?

While right now it is just a fun hobby, I hope someday to be picked up by one of the college bookstores. Out of my dorm room workshop, I have learned a lot about establishing a profit margin, making about $800 in my first round of sales (go Sophie!).  As an intended communication and retail major, this experience has allowed me to explore within the realm of both of these areas.

How can we contact Iron and Thread?

I can be contacted via Instagram @iron.and.thread or email ironandthread96@gmail.com. If you see me around campus, I’d be happy to discuss designs with you!
