Campus Celebrity: Alisa Juhl

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Have you ever dreamed of starting up your own business, but didn’t think there was enough time in the day to manage that and school? Well, Alisa Juhl is going to be your next big inspiration! Not only is she a full-time nursing student and a nanny, she’s created a beautiful, successful jewelry line named Whimsy & Grace. The dreamy name is the perfect description for her elegant, classic pieces that include the perfect amount of sparkle to bring a little fun to any day. I had the opportunity to talk with Alisa and learn more about the process of starting up a business and about her fabulous line.

To start out with, what gave you the idea to state a jewelry line?

The inspiration to start a jewelry line came from my love of creativity. Ever since I was little I have always enjoyed anything that had to do with crafts. As I grew older, so did my appreciation for design and style. Through this, I found my true passion to be jewelry design.

Why’d you choose to start with accessories?

I decided to start with accessories because they are a great way to spice up and bring any outfit together.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

When designing, I constantly look around for inspiration. There are so many things that inspire me, from color, to nature and fashion.

What is the process you went through to get your business up and running?

A lot went in to starting this business. Designing and creating the products was the most important step in creating this business. Designing business cards and developing a website was also an important part of the process. Lastly, I had to register my business with the state. Starting this business has been a learning process in so many ways.

What is the most difficult thing about being a young entrepreneur?

The most difficult aspect of being a young entrepreneur is lack of experience. Being a nursing major, business is a whole new world to me. Going out to make sales to customers and to retail stores has also been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding parts of starting this business.

Do you have any dreams for Whimsy and Grace? Aspirations?

I definitely have big dreams and aspirations for Whimsy & Grace. Having my jewelry line sold in a major retail store would be a dream come true! One day I hope to see one of these whimsical pieces on the wrist of every fashionista out there!

What is your favorite thing about your line?

There are so many things I love about this line. One of my favorite things about the line is the simplicity of the products. The designs are trendy and stylish, yet classic. These products are also customizable with color and style! I also love how you can layer pieces and create new looks everyday. Lastly, most products are only $15.00, style and affordability all in one. These pieces are the perfect way to add a little sparkle, fashion and beauty to any wardrobe!

If there were one piece that you think is essential to every girl’s wardrobe, what would it be?

If I had to choose an essential piece to add to every girl’s wardrobe it would have to be the dark grey and silver, sideways cross-beaded bracelet. This bracelet is our best seller and is neutral enough to add to any outfit.

What’s your advice for college students wanting to start their own business?

If you have a dream, follow it! Don’t be afraid to seek advice and ask for help from those around you. The process may seem new and challenging at first, but will definitely be worth it!

How should someone place an order?

To place orders simply send an email to whimsyandgracejewelry@gmail.com or call Alisa Juhl at 262.490.9029. Make sure to include the color of whimsical beads you would like and also the type of cross or pendant your creative heart desires.
