Songs Grey’s Anatomy Has Ruined for Everyone

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wilfrid Laurier chapter.

DISCLAIMER: If you are not up-to-date with Grey’s Anatomy, I highly suggest that you stop reading (unless you already know what happens). SPOILER ALERT!

Grey’s Anatomy is known for its dramatic storylines, highly attractive cast, and most importantly, its soundtrack. Anyone who watches any of Shonda Rhimes’ shows knows that she is the queen of playing with your emotions, and Grey’s Anatomy is no exception. Any Grey’s fan knows that when you hear certain songs, you are instantly reminded of the show. So, here are 9 songs from Grey’s Anatomy that you will never be able to listen to the same way again, because no one stays happy in Shondaland!

1. “Breathe” by Anna Nalick (Season 2 Episode 17)

This song plays during the scene where Meredith pulls a grenade from a patient’s chest. The song suggests a sense of security, that the bomb will be removed safely. That is, until the bomb is removed, and the song comes to abrupt stop, leaving nothing but an image of pink dust on the screen, and so many unanswered questions.

2. “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol (Season 2 Episode 27)

Here, Izzie Stevens discovers that her love interest, Denny Duquette, has passed away, and proceeds to tell the attendings that she is giving up on being a surgeon.

3. “Keep Breathing” by Ingrid Michaelson (Season 3 Episode 25)

This scene ruins the song for us because we see the intelligent, independent Cristina Yang at one of her lowest points, as Meredith cuts her out of her wedding dress, after Preston Burke leaves her at the altar.

4. “Poison & Wine” by The Civil Wars (Season 6 Episode 9)

In this scene, the stress Richard is under drives him to start drinking again.  Lyrics like, “I don’t love you, but I always will” make this scene even more dramatic. Is this a possible message from Richard to alcohol?

5. “In My Veins” by Andrew Belle (Season 6 Episode 24)

I think we can all agree that the hospital shooting was one of the most dramatic season finales in Grey’s Anatomy history. This particular song was playing when Bailey and her patient dragged resident Charles Percy to an elevator in hopes of saving his life; they did not succeed.

6. “Feels Like the End” by Mikky Ekko (Season 9 Episode 2)

This song was playing when the first of the “McHotty” duo died. It “feels like the end” of the world for most of the characters, but for Mark “McSteamy” Sloan, it is a moment of joy, as he hopes to reconnect with Lexie Grey in a beautiful afterworld.

7. “All Of Me” by John Legend (Season 9 Episode 24)

This song suggests happiness. Throughout most of the scene people are making up, making out, and falling in love. But, yet again, Shonda Rhimes fools us all,  by ending the scene with Cristina choosing surgery over Owen, breaking his heart.

8. “We Built This City” by Aron Wright and Jill Andrews (Season 10 Episode 21)

April and Jackson finally end up together (or do they?). In this scene, the couple fight over which religion their hypothetical child will practice. Only, April blurts out that their child is no longer hypothetical, but now a reality, as she is pregnant!

9.  “Chasing Cars” by Sleeping at Last (Season 11 Episode 21)

This is a cover of the original “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol. This version plays when the nurse turns off Derek’s respirator, and Meredith has flashbacks of treasured moments with Derek. Rest in Peace McDreamy.

Now that we have prepared you for the flood of emotions you will experience upon watching these episodes, go forth, binge watch and cry.

I'm a lover of all things pop culture. By pop culture, I mean McDonald's and rap music. Also dogs. I love dogs.

Wilfrid Laurier

You will typically see me with a large cup of tea and browsing social media under the fairy lights and reading up on my favourite lady bosses (Mindy Kaling let me be you please). Also my trivia regarding superheroes is endless. I have more music than time to listen to and someone definitely should consider taking away my blogging privileges. My love for pop culture is limitless and Netflix is the true MVP in my opinion. Contributor writer for HerCampus Laurier Stalk me and let's be friends here: Insta & Twitter: webofem
