“Being a doctor is more of a lifestyle than a profession… If I didn’t become a doctor I feel like I’d be letting down all the people I haven’t met in my life yet!”

Meet Timothy Varghese, a passionate med school hopeful, with one heck of a hectic schedule: volunteering, working at the rec centre, tutoring students as a part of the Leadership and Mentorship Program (LAMP) and leading the Bachelors of Medical Science Association (BMSA). This kid’s got ambition, with a resume to back up his goals. Western, you’re looking at the next McDreamy (or McSteamy)!

Age: 21Program: 4th Year BMSC, Specialization in Interdisciplinary Medical SciencesHometown: Richmond HillRelationship Status: Single and Not Mingling (Or so he says)

Are their any disciplines, besides the sciences, that you wish you had dabbled in during your university career?

“I think one of the biggest problems with university is that medical science makes you stick to medical courses because they give you higher GPAs. But if I had the chance to take any course, I would have taken humanities – a lot of them – and courses that were more hands on.”

When you’re not studying, what do you like to do in your spare “Tim” relax time?

“Uhmm I don’t have a lot of spare “Tim” relax time, not anymore.”

Well then what would you do in an ideal world during your spare time?

“Ideally, I would be doing what I’m doing right now. I like being involved; involved in things that kind of have a ripple effect. It’s as Eleanor Roosevelt said, ‘Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.’ When people talk about free time in terms of relaxing – I did that over the summer and I hated it. I like being involved, doing things that I see the results to. If one day someone said ‘because of you I kept going’ – those kinds of things are what I want to do in my spare time.”

How about any personal activities?

“I like working out. I’m going to be the most boring person you interview.”

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

“No. There are soooo many things. No.”

“Well, wealth distribution, there’s too much of an income gap between the rich and the poor. In America and Canada, it’s not even close to what it’s like in third world countries. There’s this drastic contrast between the people in mansions and the people begging outside of them, when at the core both are essentially human. It begs the question of what makes one group more superior than the other? Nothing! Really, money is just a common denominator.”

Okay now on to fun questions!

What is your ideal first date?

“The best one I’ve come close to was when I cooked. It was a disaster, but I found my mom’s recipes… Anyway I’d invite a girl over and I’d cook for her.”

Hey girl’s love food!

“Girl’s like guys who can cook too!” (Touché.)

If you had to date a Disney princess, which one would you pick and why?

“Hmm. I don’t know what do other people say?”

Hey now, this is your interview!

“Okay, who is there? Cinderella? You know what, Jasmine. Jasmine is the only one who likes Aladdin because of his personality. Every other one is… take Cinderella, yea she likes him, but her main inclination to go to the ball was because he was a prince… Jasmine didn’t take sh**. She didn’t like him as Prince Ali Ababwa or whatever, but she liked him as Aladdin the market boy. I think that’s dope.”

So I know you don’t have a lot of spare time, but what shows are you currently binge watching or recommending?

“Okay so I’m guilty of a bit of spare time… I love Game of Thrones, I’ve binge watched that more than once. Also, Breaking Bad and Prison Break – even though they’ve been out for a while.”

Speaking of television. Here’s the situation: The Walking Dead is real; we’re in a zombie apocalypse. What’s your game plan?

“Oh…. If this comes up on the med interview… I’m not going to get in anywhere.”

“I would probably find the most protected place; get a bunch of food, and just camp there until they come. “

Until they come? And then what?

“Die. Enjoy life while I can, eat as much as possible.”
