How to Enjoy Being Single on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Western chapter.

Hey there!Guess what month it is – Yep, February! Valentine’s Day is creeping up on us and I’m sure there’s a huge collective groan from the mass of singles out there…Personally, I love Valentine’s Day, regardless if I’m in a relationship or not. Why? It’s a great day filled with love, happiness, and hope. I’m a fourth year and haven’t had a real valentine since first year; but I don’t get down! Here are some tips on how to make the most of your single-life Valentine’s!

Share it with friends

Don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend? Who cares?! Gather up some gal pals and have a GNI (Girls Night In). Power up the Netflix, pop some popcorn, and snuggle in for a great night ahead with people you really love. The possibilities are actually endless –- watch movies, play board games, give each other make-overs. It all sounds like a typical night with your friends, but what else do you really need?

Pamper yourself

In general, whenever I’m feeling down nothing fixes that more than a good old fashioned pampering session. So if this happens to you on the 14th, here’s what to do:

  • Take a nice, long, hot bath – bath salts, fizzy balls, LUSH bath bombs, bubble bars, whatever your heart desires. Settle in the tub with a glass of wine, a good book, and some soothing music. Don’t forget to rest a towel behind your head and maybe slap on a face mask if you’re feeling really adventurous.
  • Give yourself a manicure/pedicure; try a new nail polish colour (My current faves are Urban Outfitters’ “Spiked Punch” and “TUTU”).
  • Put on your favourite movie or TV show (The Mindy Project is being binge-watched as we speak) while wrapped in the warmest blanket you can find.
  • Go out and buy yourself some flowers and chocolate – who says a significant other has to do it for you? Treat yourself to something special; you’ll be surprised how much this simple act can cheer you up

Finish something!

Remember that laundry you’ve been meaning to put away for about two weeks now? You know… that pile of clothes just chillin’ in the corner that you pick at when you need a clean sweater. Or maybe you’ve wanted to organize your class notes in preparation for midterms. What about those dishes you’ve put off doing for weeks? Finally do those things! Distract yourself and do all the little chores you’ve been wanting to do and you’ll be surprised how quickly the time passes – you won’t even remember what day it is by the time you jump in your bed.

If you can, get out of town!

Nothing heals the soul better than getting out of your head for a little bit. All you need is a change of scenery — if you can’t leave London, consider staying with a friend Valentine’s weekend, or maybe a local hotel. Act like you’re visiting London for the first time; if you’re with a friend, give yourself new names and take on Richmond Row!

Have an indulgent night

Gather your friends, and let everyone bring either their favourite dish or something super yummy that you’ve all been avoiding because of the caloric count or whatever. Valentine’s Day is definitely a night to go all out, especially when you’re single! It’s up there with Christmas and Thanksgiving when it comes to cheat days. Break out the brownies, ice cream, and raw cookie dough, and DIG IN!

Find a Lover!

KIDDING – seriously. Guys, if there’s nothing I can’t stress enough, it’s that you don’t need a significant other to make you happy. Of course it’s nice to have a guy/girl who’s your person -– but really, what would you prefer? Meredith and McDreamy, or Meredith and Cristina? (Yes, I’m a Grey’s Anatomy freak too, I admit it). Learn to love yourself, and don’t go looking for another person. When you stop looking is when it happens. But anyway, you’re an independent lady who don’t need no man *sassy finger snaps*.

Cheese overload; I think I’ll just stop right there. Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!
