How to Survive Exam Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Waterloo chapter.

You may be stressed and feeling like this right now:

…But follow these helpful tips and (hopefully) you’ll survive this exam season.

1. Stock up on lots of tea/ coffee and healthy snacks.

It’s extremely important that you take proper care of yourself during this time of year. Take the time to prepare some healthier snacks ahead of time to avoid splurging on excessive amounts of fast food!

2. Plan your study time.

Make a schedule for yourself. Plan times to study, take time to relax and see friends, and bonus points if you can find time to exercise. If you plan out your days you’ll find that you waste less time and become more productive during the time that you set aside to study or work on final projects.

3. Get colourful!

Use coloured post-it notes, cue cards and highlighters to help you study.  By colour coding you can easily break down different topics and group relevant information. This will help you memorize everything much faster.

Example colour coding guide:

  • Pink (titles and headlines)

  • Blue (terms and vocab)

  • Green (definitions/explanations of terms and vocab – green explains blue)

  • Orange (examples of terms)

  • Yellow (other important things/misc.)

4. Don’t skip the practice questions!

Instructors provide practice questions to help you! They might even give you a better idea of what types of questions will be on the exam. It doesn’t help you to just read, memorize, study and never process. You need to know how to fully grasp concepts and apply them. Whatever you do, don’t skip the practice questions.

5. Find a study buddy.

Maybe not this cute lil fur baby, but find someone you can study with. It can be a friend that helps to motivate you, or someone in your program or course that you can go through the material with so that you both have better understanding of the course!

6. SLEEP!

Sleep is so important. We all love it and need it. It keeps us healthy and in the right state of mind. Enough with the late nights and all-nighters, your body needs to rest. SO, take care of yourself and get your 8 hours in every night, because let’s face it… how much information do you actually retain when you’re basically a zombie?

Hopefully you find these tips helpful to your survival this exam season and may the bell-curve be ever in your favour!
