Top 20 Chick Flicks of All Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wash U chapter.

Sometimes a girls’ movie night is simply a necessity. But the question always remains, what movie should we watch? Well, below is your cheat sheet to the most quotable, memorable, and sassiest chick flicks out there.

1. The Parent Trap (1998)

Every girl’s first and most beloved chick flick – a #tbt to when Li-Lo was still innocent and cutting our own bangs seemed like a great idea!

2. Mean Girls (2004)

The Bible/Torah of chick flicks and possibly the most quotable of them all. Though most of what took place in this movie was absolutely cruel (and may have been some people’s reality just a couple of years ago), it is undeniably hilarious and at many times wise. Gretchen Weiners basically wrote the girl code when she said, “ex-boyfriends are just off limits to friends. I mean that’s just like the rules of feminism.”

3. Legally Blonde (2001)

This next shout out goes to Elle Woods, the girl who tricked some of us into thinking that getting into Harvard was easy. But how could we not forgive this stylish, sassy, and SMART sorority girl? Elle was the first to teach us that, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.” Words to live by.

4. Friends with Benefits (2011)

A more recent chick flick based off of the idea that no one dates anymore these days… until they do. If you’re not already in love with Justin Timberlake, you will be after this one. And the same goes for Mila Kunis.

5. The Notebook (2004)

The sappiest of all chick flicks, this movie will literally make your heart hurt. This was the first time you fell in love with Ryan Gosling (unless you were a tomboy and watched Remember the Titans), but absolutely not the last. The Notebook made every single girl believe that every summer she would fall in love and find her husband. There’s still hope ladies.

6.  Clueless (1995)

Cher, Dion, and Tai together comprise the ultimate clique. This movie not only takes valley girl lingo to a whole new level, but also creates unreasonably high expectations for the way a closet should work.

7. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

Holly Golightly defines the term socialite, living the classiest lifestyle that every girl dreams of. Her cat, Cat, made pets the most chic accessory.

8. Bridesmaids (2011)

This predominantly female cast gives every male comedian a run for his money. Whoever said girls couldn’t be funny, I challenge you with this movie.

9. Country Strong (2010)

This movie is a crucial part of every chick flick repertoire, mixing it up with a bit of country flare. Country Strong even features two members of Hollywood royalty, Gwyneth Paltrow and Leighton Meester.

10. Cruel Intentions (1999)

These private school stepsiblings take a friendly bet to a whole new level, involving the new headmaster’s daughter, played by Reese Witherspoon. This semi-twisted romantic comedy may even have you believing that the right girl can turn even the baddest bad-boy love stricken.

11. Titanic (1997)

One of the most romantic films of all of the chick flicks listed. This tearjerker is beautiful, tragic, and joyful all at the same time.

12. Pretty Woman (1990)

A Julia Roberts masterpiece. She makes the impossible possible as an endearing escort introduced to the life of the rich and famous.

13. The Holiday (2006)

This Rom-Com tells the story of two love-troubled women, played by Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet, who swap homes for vacation and end up finding the men of their dreams. You will laugh, cry, and probably decide that you want to marry Jude Law (shocking, I know).

14. Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

Another love triangle movie, Melanie Carmichael (played by Reese Witherspoon) tries to move on from her Alabama roots in NYC — until she takes a visit home and her high school sweetheart/hubby Jake Perry (played by Josh Lucas) reenters the picture.

15. How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

This movie features Kate Hudson as the only person who could make a man fall completely in love with her while on a quest to push him away. Matthew McConaughey is undeniably swoon-worthy in this one.

16. A Walk to Remember (2002)

Tears, tears, and more tears. This one will get you every time. And you’ll still want more!

17. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

This modern day Shakespearean tale turned high school romance will make you look at every moody and mysterious guy a little differently. Maybe he could be the man of your dreams too!

18. Miss Congeniality (2000)

Sandra Bullock plays the most hilarious, frank, and out of place character of all time as she transforms from FBI agent to undercover beauty queen. Her character is horrifically endearing.

19. Dear John (2010)

To all of those in a long distance relationship, use this chick flick as inspiration. Channing Tatum, who plays a soldier headed back to war, will do anything to maintain his love with Amanda Seyfried’s character, Savannah. He doesn’t look too bad in this movie either.

20. Notting Hill (1999)

Things I learned from this movie: It is possible to coincidentally run into and fall in love with an international celebrity.
