Relationships can be fun and empowering and amazing, but sometimes it’s time to let them go.  Every relationship has its natural arc, and sometimes it’s better to break up before the fireworks come. Here are some signs that it maybe time to let it go.

1. You spend less and less time together

If you turn to friends and family or someone with whom you share an attraction to share your life with or exclude your significant other from hanging out with you, you probably shouldn’t stay together. It’s normal to be excited for GNO or hang out with your club or Sorority but if you look forward to that time more than being with your partner, then that’s a serious red flag.

2. You can’t seem to communicate effectively

If you are fighting constantly and picking fights over the smallest issues, ones that you overlooked earlier in the relationship, you might want to consider whether or not it’s worth it to continue being together. It’s true some people fight more than others, but if the frequency, duration and intensity are changing for the worse, it might be an indication of significant and insurmountable problems.

3. You feel trapped or limited by the relationship

If you feel like your relationship has a significant and stifling hold on your life then that’s a sign that what’s going on isn’t healthy and could be potentially abusive. You don’t have to stay in a situation you feel trapped in or limited by. Relationships are supposed to improve your life and add to it, not make life stressful and detract from your bigger picture. If you feel this way, really consider breaking up with your partner. You deserve better.

4. You avoid intimacy with your SO

It’s natural that after you’ve been with your SO for a while you hook up less, but if you’re actively avoiding the bedroom with them, it could be a sign that the spark and attraction isn’t there.

These are only a few signs and signals that could signal the end of your relationship but if you have major reservations about your SO and you feel like the trajectory of your relationship isn’t going where you want… break up. There is absolutely no reason to try and make a dead relationship work nor is it fun to put tons of effort into a sinking ship.
