The Ultimate Study Playlist

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

Winter break is officially over, and Work Forest is back in action. As the weeks progress and we begin to get accustomed to the groove of college once again, the impending work load and pile of assignments seems daunting. Even the mere idea of studying and working hard makes the notion of procrastination appear all the more enticing.

Music, however, makes studying seem just a little less painful. Although music is a distraction to some, finding the right type of music to place you in an academic and concentrated mindset is not that difficult to do!

Find what works for you. Some people I have talked to love listening to music with a strong rhythm and an upbeat tempo to get them motivated and passionate about getting work completed. Others claim that simple instrumental or classical music helps as background noise to cancel out the surrounding environment. Personally, I like a wide variety of music – but when it comes to reading and completing most assignments, I enjoy peaceful, usually folky but sometimes instrumental music.

It all depends on personal taste and what helps you get into the right atmosphere for concentration. I know people who listen to white noise but I also know someone who listens to metal – just find what works for you.

For inspiration, let me introduce you to my own personal top ten study buddies of music –

Balmorhea

Instrumental, soothing, influenced by the classical genre while still maintaining an atmospheric quality. Easy to listen to and prime for studying.

Bon Iver

We all know Skinny Love.” He has more to offer – trust me.

City and Colour

One of my favorite bands to study to – acoustic, folk, an indie music lover’s dream for getting your school assignments completed.

Daughter

More moody, soothing, folk music . This time with an amazing female lead.

Fleetwood Mac

Everyone needs classic rock in their lives. Fleetwood Mac is the perfect opportunity to merge a timeless band into a busy student’s study schedule.

ODEZSA

Atmospheric, electronica genius. A favorite.

The Head and the Heart

Many apologies for another folky band – but this one is a classic that I cannot help to include. If you haven’t heard more than just “Rivers and Roads” then I highly suggest you go do so.

Iron and Wine

His earlier albums Our Endless Numbered Days and The Shepherd’s Dog are excellent for study background music. A unique, yet very soothing indie artist.

Ray LaMontagne

Once again, a classic. Reminiscent of greater artists of the past and a great fusion of blues, folk, and soul.

Tired Pony

The musical baby of Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol), Richard Colburn (Belle and Sebastian) and Peter Buck (R.E.M.) … Need I say more…

Hopefully these suggestions will inspire you to incorporate the wonderful world of music into the busy, hectic life of a Wake Student. See what motivates you and create your own study playlist!
