Pro Tips on How to Survive the Holidays

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

The holiday season is so amazing, fun, and festive, but it can also be stressful. There are a lot of expectations that come it, and there can sometimes be a lot of drama. Here is my advice to handling the coming month:

Let go of your expectations.

Christmas doesn’t have to be perfect for it be amazing! Let go of what you think your holiday “should” look like and embrace what it is. Fill your mind instead with the joy and spirit that the holiday season brings. If you don’t get that one present you really wanted or your “perfect” Christmas dinner ends up destroyed, shake it off. The holidays are special. Focus on being happy in the moment, not trying to force your holiday perfect.

Handle your family members with humor.

The holidays come with a lot of family time. It is more likely than not that a family member (or two) will get under your skin. Instead of rolling your eyes or wishing that your family could be “normal,” laugh it off. Cherish the time you have with your loved ones. Every family is unique and sometimes those annoying moments end up being the things you will remember most.

Indulge but don’t go crazy.

Christmas also comes with a lot of food! It’s delicious and amazing, but not the healthiest. My advice is to let yourself enjoy it, but don’t over do it. Eat one gingerbread cookie, not 4. Have a cinnamon roll, not the whole tin. You’ll end up feeling much better and won’t be regretting your decisions come January.
