Thoughts on Mother’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

Mothers Day is quickly approaching and I don’t even know what day it’s going to be. Hang on let me look before I keep writing this…ok it’s Sunday May 11th. So basically I was asked to write a Mother’s Day piece for Her Campus, but I had no idea what to say. I don’t like holidays like this; aside from your birthday I don’t really believe in the idea of one specific day holding so much value for one person, at the same time I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of my mom.

Growing up I had a lot of big dreams about my life and my Mom always encouraged me to pursue them. Her catchphrase to this day whenever I’m trying to figure out what career path to follow is “do what you love and do what makes you happy.” I grew up in a home where I was never pressured to be someone I wasn’t and because of this I am now an adult with a really strong sense of self. My Mom stayed home with me until I was in middle school and any time I hear someone saying stay at home parents have an easy job I have to roll my eyes, because I know how much work my Mom put into taking care of me. It doesn’t matter what her job is, my Mom always puts 100 percent effort into everything she does and she is the person who taught me what strong work ethic really is.

I am not the type of person who would call her mom one of her best friends and my Mom isn’t the type of person to say that about her daughter either, but our relationship with one another is very strong and I am so grateful to have her in my life. When I was fourteen I was having a really rough day and I started talking to my Mom about it. After she was done listening to everything I had to say she looked at me and told me: “Emily I don’t just love you because you’re my daughter I really like you as a person too.” This is still one of the best things anyone has ever said to me; clichéd as it might sound.

Overall I still think holidays like Mother’s and Father’s Day are kind of silly, mainly because I think you should try to appreciate your parents and tell them you love them every day, but I know that this Mother’s Day is going to be special. This was the first year I didn’t live with my parents and by the time Mother’s Day is here I will be back with them for the summer. So I don’t know what we’re doing for Mother’s Day at the Kelly household, but whatever it is we’ll get to do it as a family and I know that’s a gift my Mom will really like….and I’ll probably get her a card and some flowers too.
