Style Icons for Every Type of College Woman

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at VCU chapter.

While college is usually a diverse place devoid of high school cliques, there are always groups of certain styles. From fashion majors to fitness junkies, every type of college woman needs a fashion icon who encompasses their aesthetic.

The IDGAF’s

These are the girls that show up to class in sweatpants with 10 soft tacos from Taco Bell. These girls get through the week with no makeup and no f***s to give. Honestly, everyone wishes they had the amount of chill that these inspirational ladies have. It is because of this zero f***s given attitude that Amy Schumer is the perfect style icon for the pajama-wearing, trenti-Starbucks-drinking college woman.

The Fitness Junkies

Somehow these women are always going to or from the gym. They live in yoga pants and Nikes and always have an extra pair of headphones on them. While you sip on your second mocha with extra whip of the day, these girls are on mile five of their “light morning jog.” Despite seemingly only owning sports bras and sneakers, you can count on them to look flawless on a night out on the town. Because of this, Julianne Hough is the ultimate fitness junkie fashion icon. She always rocks the latest workout styles and can still get glam for the red carpet.

The Art Kids

With their blonde bobs and grungy denim, these girls are the reason the ’90s are back in vogue. Often seen with a huge canvas or covered in clay from sculpture class, the art kids pull off the weirdest outfits with ease. Yet when the rest of us try pairing thigh high platforms with overalls and 20 chokers, it just doesn’t work. Miley Cyrus is queen of the art kids’ style. Her bold looks and artsy attitude is what crowns her the style icon for art college students.

The Sorority Girls

Whether it be tabling for a cause or just proudly wearing their letters, these girls are around every corner on campus. Most often seen in leggings and spirit jerseys or a cute, usually preppy outfit, the sorority girls’ fashion icon is Reese Witherspoon. Elle Woods will forever be the most iconic sorority girl and Reese is basically her IRL.

The Fashion Majors

Fashion majors cannot be boxed into one style. From bold to chic to vintage styles, fashion majors always are the best dressed in the room and the first to hop on a new trend. The only celebrity who can truly encompass all that the fashion majors have to offer is North West. Honestly, this kid is more stylish than the entirety of Milan, Italy. North can rock a military jacket one day and slay in a black tutu the next and look more stylish than Kim and Kanye combined.

The Bookworms

Most often found in the library or leading a study session, the “bookworm” college women rock the “librarian chic” look. These girls will always have an extra cardigan on hand and flash cards for every study session. Queen of the nerdy look, Zooey Deschanel, is the ultimate bookworm style icon. Her cardigans and polka dots are the epitome of librarian chic.

The Granolas

Usually head of the campus environmental club, these girls can often be found on the campus lawn or next to a tree. Fringe and crocheted tops are a hippie girl staple. To find these women, follow the smell of patchouli and the sound of the Grateful Dead. Vanessa Hudgens, who has been dubbed “queen of Coachella,” is the best candidate for the granola college girl fashion icon.

The Party People

While you may rarely see these women during the week, they appear every weekend and are somehow at every party you go to. They know everyone and everyone knows them even if it’s as “that girl who outdrinks everyone” or “the girl who passed out in the Tri Sig bathroom” instead of as their actual name. Amber Rose’s body con dresses, crop tops, sky-high heels and carpe diem attitude encompasses the party girl aesthetic.
