Natural Hair Girls: 3 Easy Hairstyles for College Curlies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

College life can be stressful, but the last thing you want to struggle with on a busy day of classes is your hair! You were too tired to do anything to your hair the night before, and you wake up surrounded by a mess of curls that need to be tamed fast before you run off to class. We’ve all been there! Here are a few quick hairstyles to put your curly morning woes to rest!

1. Wash-and-Gos

A wash and go is essentially what the name implies. You wash your hair and go, but there are a few things you can do to make sure your curls pop and retain moisture throughout the day. First, start this style on freshly washed hair. Next, take your favorite leave-in conditioner and oil (my favorites are Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk and coconut oil). Divide your hair into two or three sections and work the products throughout your hair with your fingers. Really focus on the ends of your hair to avoid dryness and to have extra juicy curls. If you want, you can add a cute side braid or flat twist to spice things up. Shake your curls out to get the desired shape and go! Your curls will be bouncy and soft all day!

2. High bun

A high bun is another classic style for curlies that doesn’t require much more than some bobby pins, a hair band and some gel. I usually start by applying my gel all around my hair and brushing it up into a high ponytail. (My favorite gel to use for this style is Argan Oil Eco Styler gel.) Next, start shaping your hair into a bun, placing pins throughout to hold the hair in place. If you have a little extra time after this, tie a scarf (preferably a satin one) around your head (not the bun) and let the gel set and mold your hair for a sleeker look. You can always add a nice flat twist or head band to this hairstyle as well in order to make it super cute!

3. Halo twist/ braid

For this style you will need a few bobby pins and a little gel to help smooth the hair and tame frizz. You will start by putting some gel on your fingers and grabbing some hair on either side of your head. Begin flat twisting or braiding your hair all the way around, grabbing more gel as needed. Tuck the end of your hair into the top part of your flat twist or braid and pin it down. You may wish to pin down your hair in any place where it may be sticking up. You may also want to brush down those baby hairs to complete the look. Now you’re ready for your busy day! Wrap your head at night with a satin scarf or bonnet and this style can last for the next few days!

Being a curly girl may require a lot of work, but it doesn’t have to be a struggle. If you’re ever in a rush and need a quick go-to style, try one of these hairdos. You won’t be disappointed!
