5 Tips For Spring Cleaning Your Closet

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Valdosta chapter.

Well ladies, the weather is finally warm and you know what that means: it’s time to toss your winter wear to the side and make room for your spring wardrobe! I know the spring cleaning process can be a bit tedious, overwhelming, and not to mention time consuming. Here are a few tips to help whip your closet into tip-top shape, and make the process run a whole lot smoother!

1. Devote time

The first thing you need to remember when doing any type of cleaning is to make sure you set aside time for it. Spring cleaning is definitely an ongoing process and can take up to a whole day. By clearing your schedule, or doing it on a more convenient day you give yourself more time to complete your task.

2. Set the tone

Music has the ability to influence the way you work. A fun upbeat playlist can improve your work ethic completely! Creating the right playlist can make you feel energized and put your spring cleaning task into full motion.

3. Put it all in order

Organization is an important factor to remember when cleaning your closet. By dividing everything into sections it makes this process, and possibly your life, a whole lot easier. Start by separating your clothes and dividing them into different sections such as: shirts, bottoms, shoes, purses, etc. Consider using clothing bins to put your seperated clothes in versus putting them in piles, it will create a more clutter free environment. The bins will make everything neater and will make your items more accessible as well.

4. Let it go

Once you’ve sorted everything out it is now time for the hard part — deciding what stays and what goes. This is perhaps the hardest step in the spring cleaning process. The easiest way to go about this is to ask yourself 3 essential questions:

  • When was the last time I wore this item?
  • Will I ever wear this item again?
  • Is it just taking up space in my closet?

Don’t make this process harder than it has to be. If you haven’t worn it in over a year just get rid of it. Honestly, you probably didn’t even know you still had that item to begin with, so just toss it!

5. Welcome new wardrobe to your closet

Now that you’ve done the hard part it’s now time for the fun and easy part, shopping! I know getting rid of clothes and different items can be difficult, but it can also be a great thing because it gives you a reason to buy new clothes and to do some much needed retail therapy. Let’s face it, after all that cleaning shopping is just the thing you need to put your mind at ease!

Happy Spring cleaning, collegiates!
