12 Moments You Can Relate to if You Work in a Coffee Shop

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWM chapter.

1. Waking up at 4:30am to open the cafe.

You haven’t even left your bed yet and you can already tell it’s going to be a long shift.

2. When you’re not even open yet and there’s already a line of customers forming outside the cafe.

Seriously, it’s 6:30am??

3. When a regular comes in and expects you to know their exact order automatically.

You do realize that we see over 100 faces with different orders every hour or so, right?

4. When you and your co-workers take a few espresso shots to wake up and then everyone starts to feel energized at the same time.

Sometime it’s fun, sometimes it’s a little chaotic.

5. Forgetting to write a customer’s name on the cup then struggling to remember what they looked like and what they were wearing in order to give them their order.

This is probably worse then having to do quick math when a customer gives you extra change after you ring them up.

6. Trying to perfect your latte art.

So. Much. Practice.

7. When you run out of brewed coffee, realize there aren’t any back-up coffee’s made and there’s a line of customers forming.

Never, ever run out of back-up’s. Ever.

8. Accidentally burning yourself on hot coffee, hot water or even worse… getting burned from the espresso machine.

Don’t worry, it only stings for a few seconds…most of the time.

9. When a customer comes in and says “got anything else here besides coffee? I don’t like coffee.”

We do… but you do know where you are, right?

10. When the drink line keeps growing and you start to get overwhelmed, then you look over and see the customers staring at you as you frantically try to make their drink.

We’re trying our best here! No need to watch our every move, we promise to get your order up as quickly as we can.

11. When you’ve restocked, organized and cleaned the milk and sugar station and then see it’s been destroyed 10 minutes later.

Why bother, you tried.

12. When you finally get through a long shift but you smell like coffee… good thing or bad thing?

The smell of coffee can either be satisfying or very nauseating.

Just a 22-year-old Wisconsin college student with a whole lot of Minnesota pride. You can catch me serving coffee, watching netflix and exploring as many new places as I can.
