Pay It Forward: Community Service Opportunities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

Trying to pay it forward this year? Have the New Years resolution of personal growth or contributing to the community? Her Campus has your back with five low cost, no car needed, service opportunities happening right here in Burlington!

1.)   For the daredevil: Check out Burlington’s Penguin Plunge! On February 7th jump into the icy waters of Lake Champlain to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Vermont. Be sure to register soon and bring lots of blankets!

2.)   For the dancer: Be sure to go to UVM’s annual 12 hour dance marathon! Only $5.00 at the door and all proceeds go to the Be Positive Foundation, an organization that is committed to funding childhood cancer research, and providing financial aid to families with children in treatment.

3.)   For the weekend walker: On April 11th skip your Saturday stroll to the farmers market and participate in Burlington’s National Eating Disorder Association walk, happening right here on the college green! With eating disorders being a huge issue on college campuses this walk really hits home. Grab some friends and register on: http://neda.nationaleatingdisorders.org/site/TR/NEDAWalk/General?fr_id=3580&pg=entry

4.)   For the crafty gal: Spread the smiles by joining Operation Beautiful. Leave positive post-its around town (or campus) on mirrors, desks, whatever you feel! Write an inspirational quote or remind someone of their beauty! For more ideas check out http://www.operationbeautiful.com

5.)   For the natural chef: Check out Campus Kitchens or FeelGood, both student clubs take place right on campus! A chance to cook up a storm AND pay it forward? Count me in! You can find their information by visiting http://www.uvm.edu/sga/?Page=clubs.html&SM=menu_clubs.html
