Oscar Looks To Love and Learn From

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVM chapter.

I was completely blown away the looks at the Oscars this year. Stunning. One that stood out to me in particular was Charlize Theron. Not only can this woman rock a sexy pixie cut, but she’s also the perfect example of the tried and true “less is more” mantra. She went for a beautiful Christian Dior couture white gown, Harry Winston bracelets and earrings, and Roger Vivier shoes. The classic silhouette of the dress showed off her shape beautifully, which goes to show you don’t need an over-the-top, extravagant dress to turn heads. Besides the dress, one of the first things I noticed about her look was her makeup. She kept it simple, with glowing, perfect skin and striking, vibrant eyes. No dramatic wing eyeliner or dark red lips here! The nude color palette she used for her makeup perfectly complimented her natural beauty. So what are the beauty take-aways from Charlize Theron?

  • Wear clothes that flatter your shape.
  • Don’t hide behind a lot of makeup, flaunt that beautiful fresh face!
  • Keep it simple! Just as Coco Chanel once said, take off one accessory before leaving the house.

Floating out onto the red carpet, Amy Adams rocked a stunning Oscar de la Renta dress. I truely would kill to be in her shoes, not only for her success and awesome personality, but also to be sporting a feathery dress from my favorite designer. The look itself together with the subtle beauty. Her make up, completley flawless, was a very natural smokey look that did so much more than compliment the jewels shes rocking for earrings. One of my other favorites? The hair. The updo opened her face and left emphasis for her dress to make the statement. So what should we take away from Ms. Adams?

  • For a statement piece (such as the Oscar de la Renta dress), use a more natural look and top off with a great eyeliner.
  • Pull your hair back into a loose updo to open up your face for a more fresh and warm look.
  • Don’t forget to accessorize appropriately. Its just as complimenting to your look as your make up.
  • Get a great statement dress. Rock it. Make them want more!

The other look I was excited about was Anne Hathaway’s. She looked stunning in a pale pink Prada gown with a glamorous jeweled necklace. Most of the time, pale colors on people with fair skin tend to leave them looking washed out, yet with Anne’s rich brown hair and pink lips, she had enough color pop to pull it off. I also loved her darkly lined eyes, which brought attention to one of her best features. Anne Hathaway also demonstrates how you can show off skin in a classy way (disregard the nippleage). She’s wearing an open-back dress, yet there’s a high neckline in front for compensation. So what are the beauty take-aways from Anne Hathaway?

  • Be cautious of wearing pale colors if you have fair skin, make sure to add some color!
  • Show off skin, but in a classy way.
  • Wear a stick-on bra if necessary (which in this case may just be the dress darts, but you never know).
