My Most Used Apps Since Coming to UVA

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UVA chapter.

Venmo: If you have this already, you know what all the hype is about, just skip to number two. If you don’t have venmo, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?? I can’t stress how amazing it is for life in college. There may be a time that you forget your wallet and a friend spots you; venmo them back. You’re buying used textbooks at a lower price from an upper classman; venmo them. Going halfsies on a gift for a friend; venmo your portion. Don’t be the friend that doesn’t have venmo and slows everything down for the whole group when the check comes. Make everyone’s lives easier.

Forest: I was very skeptical of this app at first. It’s $1.99, which is pretty crazy for me considering I’ve never paid for an app in my life. I finally went ahead and bought it, and it was worth every little penny. The concept is you plant a tree and wait a certain amount of time for it to grow. You can’t use your phone during the time the tree is growing or the tree will die, so it is a miracle worker when it comes to studying for long periods of time. I’m one of those people that reaches for their phone every two seconds while studying, but this has made me 100 times more productive.

Slack: I’m a new user to Slack, but I’ve already fallen completely in love with it. If you are a member of an intense CIO, this will be a game changer. Rather than bouncing from GroupMe to Google Drive to email, Slack is an all in one place where you can share any document, message each other and get instant notifications about everything. As a leader in a CIO, this has changed my life in terms of keeping in touch with the other members and staying on top of the work that needs to get done.

Toga: This is my old faithful. There are nights where you decide last minute to go out and haven’t really heard of anything big going on or anything you’re interested in. Toga is connected to Facebook and consolidates all of the events, whether Greek, concerts or sports, that are going on during the week, so you always know of something going on. It’s an amazing backup to have when you can’t seem to find anything good that weekend.

Productive: This is an app that is designed to help you create healthy habits. It will send you reminders whenever you designate it to, reminding you to keep up with that current habit. For instance, mine reminds me to drink water, do my laundry, pay my bills and call my mom and dad. They have all kinds that you can choose from, or you can make your own. This helps me to remember the little things in life that tend to get lost in the piles of readings that I’m perpetually falling behind on.

I'm a first year at the University of Virginia. I am pursuing a double major in Economics and Psychology. I have always loved fashion and beauty, and I am seriously considering using my Economics degree to open my own salon. I'm passionate about education and volunteer with a number of groups to further the education of women overseas.
