This week’s Campus Celebrity is one of the most selfless people I know; her willingness to give and help others is remarkable. Get to know, Emily Lodge, as she speaks up about her motivation to get involved in service groups around grounds, her cool hobby/business that she created over winter break and a thing or two that you might not know about her already. Read about all this and more in this week’s edition of Campus Celebrity! Also, be sure to support Emily as she runs for Student Council Vice President of Organizations this week, February 20th-26th , at UVA.

What are you involved in around grounds?

I am a member of Alpha Phi Omega (co-ed service fraternity), a member of the University Guide Service, Chair of Service on Second Year Class Council, and a member of Student Council Public Service Committee. And I will be running for Student Council Vice President of Organizations in the upcoming month, which I am excited about!

Why are you involved with this/these organization(s)? How do they add to your experience at UVA?

On one of my mission trips to Haiti, one of the doctors told me that “gratitude is the attitude that sets the altitude for living.” This quote stuck with me and it is now the motto I try to live by. I feel so privileged to go to school at UVA, and am grateful for the education I am receiving and for the experiences I am having. The organizations I am involved with on grounds are primarily service focused, giving back to the University directly or the greater Charlottesville community. I want to give back to the University that has given me so much.  Being involved has made UVA into a home away from home. I have met some amazing people and feel like I am getting the most out of my college experience.

What is your favorite thing to do during your free time?

I really like quilting! I know it is a bit of an unusual hobby for someone my age…. I am normally the youngest person in the fabric store haha, but I really like making quilts for people! During winter break I had some free time and actually decided to open up a quilting business. It’s called Lovey Blankets and for every blanket sold a blanket goes to a newborn child in clinic in Haiti! (www.loveyblankets.com)

What are you most looking forward to this Spring Semester?

The warm weather! UVA has a completely different atmosphere when the weather is warm! I cannot wait to see everyone outside and be able to enjoy my walk to class every day.

Something people don’t know about you?

I was born with only one hand. It doesn’t hold me back from doing anything so a lot of people don’t tend to notice. So far the only thing I can’t do is monkey bars… but I’m working on it! I would definitely say having one hand is my biggest blessing because it has made me the person I am today.
