Madison Black: Student Body Vice President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Madison Black was just recently elected as the ASUU Student Body Vice President, as part of the Vision Party.  She will be serving along side ASUU Student Body President, Justin Spangler.  Madison is from Holladay, UT and is majoring in Biomedical Engineering.  She is apart of ASUU, the Honors College, the Student Alumni Board, a Primary Children’s Medical Center volunteer, and a Campus Life Mentor.  When not serving as Vice President and studying for school, Madison likes to relax by vacationing at a beach, reading, watching movies, and spending time with her friends and family.  Madison is a very hardworking student whose main goal in life is to make a change in this world.  We at Her Campus Utah believe she is an inspiration and a great role model for current and future students at the U.  We were very honored to get a chance to talk with Madison and we are very excited for you all to see what she has to say!

Her Campus (HC):  What made you come to the University of Utah?

Madison Black (MB):  Originally, I was planning on attending college at the University of Pennsylvania.  However, after coming to our campus I saw so many opportunities, which made me realize this was a place I could truly thrive and make a difference.

HC:  What’s your favorite thing about the U?

MB:  My favorite thing about the University of Utah is our campus.  Not only are there so many unique programs, there are also a variety of students and professors, which make our campus a truly incredible place to be.

HC:  What are your plans after graduating and what is your dream job?

MB:  After graduating, I plan on going to medical school.  Someday I hope to become a pediatrician and work at Primary Children’s Medical Center.  My goal is to be an advocate for children and do everything I can to help them heal.

HC:  Do you have anything fun planned for summer break?

MB:  Over the summer, I will actually be studying to take the MCAT.  However, I do plan to take some time off to go to Newport Beach and Disneyland in July.  Also, I will represent the U at a Women’s Conference in Maryland in June.

HC:  What motivated you to run for ASUU Vice President?

MB:  After serving as an Assembly Representative for the College of Engineering, I started taking notes on things I could do to improve the functionality and efficiency of the assembly.  Unfortunately, there are many student groups that have bad feelings toward ASUU in general.  During my time as the Vice President, I hope to improve this image.  I’m also thrilled to continue the initiative to help promote childcare on our campus.

HC:  Is it hard to balance schoolwork, being ASUU Vice President, and a social life?

MB:  Yes, it is very challenging.  I wake up everyday at 7:00 a.m. and go to bed around 2:00 a.m.; however, I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I love everything I am doing, and I try my best to make time for all I can.  Currently, I’m learning how to keep up with everything in my life, and I’m hoping that this summer I will be able to improve this balancing act even more.

HC:  What pushes you to work so hard?

MB:  Ever since I was in elementary school, I wanted to do and be everything I could.  My mom is someone I have always admired, and she’s always been someone who does everything she can to reach her goals.  As a young girl, I would watch her strive to be the best in her career and work so hard our family.  She always told me I could be whoever I wanted to be and has always helped me along the way.  My mom inspires me and motivates me to work harder and harder every single day.

HC:  If you could tell the student body one thing, what would it be?

MB:  Don’t ever be afraid to try something new.  Stepping on this campus my first year, I would have never thought that I would be the Student Body Vice President.  By being willing to try something new, whether it’s a class, a club, or applying for a scholarship, you will never know what will happen unless you try.  Be willing to step outside your comfort zone and understand that, no matter what, there is knowledge to be gained from every experience.
