Kayla Van Hoose: Crochet Hat Maker

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

Kayla Van Hoose could be your boyfriend’s answer to getting you the best Valentine’s Day gift! Kayla makes handmade, one of a kind, crocheted hats. She started creating them just last year and had so much success, she now sells them for all of you to buy. Just leave her Instagram page, @kaylapaigedesigns open on your man’s computer and phone, and he may just get the hint!

Her Campus (HC):  Where did you learn to knit?
Kayla Van Hoose (KVH):  I learned to crochet from a friend in the dorms last year.

HC:  What inspired you to make hats?
KVH:  I wanted to pick up a new hobby during the winter, and began making them for friends and family.

HC:  How long have you been doing it for?
KVH:  I’ve always enjoyed knitting and sewing since I was in middle school, but decided to pick up crocheting to change it up!

HC:  Do you make them in any color?
KVH:  Yes, I do! I can make a hat in any color of yarn that is sold. I prefer neutral colors of oatmeal, cream, maroon, dark/heather grey.

HC:  Do you have them for sale or can anyone buy one?
KVH:  Yes I have them for sale! I mainly market them on my Instagram and Facebook account, and am in the process of launching a website!

HC:  How do they get in touch with you?
KVH:  Until I create my website, anyone who is interested in buying one can contact me on Facebook or direct message me on Instagram @kaylapaigedesigns

HC:  Why a heart?
KVH:  My mom actually requested the first “heart hat” for an original touch. Before I knew it, I was receiving orders like crazy from women and girls all over my hometown of Hood River, OR, after they saw my mom rocking hers. I also made my first mens’ hat for my dad, which he helped me design as well!

HC:  Can you do other designs?
KVH:  Recently, I’ve been creating popular designs and experimenting with new styles. I absolutely love hearing ideas from anyone! I’m planning on some new shapes upon request in the near future, but the hearts have been keeping me so busy in the meantime!

HC:  How long have you been making them for?
KVH:  I’ve been making them since last year, but began selling them this September. Over winter break I really got into it, and made/sold most of the hats then. I still have a lot to go, and am currently accepting orders!
