6 Jaw Droppers From The 2015 VMA’s

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

The VMA’s are always worth a few eye-rolls, lots of surprises, and of course moments that make our jaws drop…

1. The show opened with Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift ending their feud over a duet, music heals all.  However, this wasn’t the only thing Nicki would try to “resolve” last night.  After winning the moon-man for Best Hip-Hop Video Nicki called out the host, Miley Cyrus, at the end of her acceptance speech.  Miley did a great job handling this and quickly segwayed to letting everyone at home know that they could still vote for artist to watch.

2. Even though Nicki calling Miley out was probably the biggest surprise that isn’t what the VMA’s was all about.  Kanye West was honored with the Vanguard Award and even though he had a nice speech and everything the best part was how his announcement at the end of his speech.  Personally I don’t know if I will be voting for Kanye come 2020 for president but at least he has started his campaign early…be prepared.

3.  Performances by The Weekend, Twenty one Pilots and ASAP Rocky, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis killed it but didn’t slay.  The best vocals at the VMA’s came from newcomer Tori Kelly singing her single “Should Have Been Us.”  She did an amazing job and definitely left her mark on the VMA stage (in a good way). And! Her A Capella moment left us speechless.

4. Demi Lovato and Iggy Azalea came out and sang Cool For the Summer in downtown LA and did an amazing job.  As a big fan of both of these women I thought their performance was so hot.  Demi kept it fun and up beat and by having Iggy come in and do a quick remix was perfect to make the performance that much more memorable.

5. One performance that every Belieber was looking forward to was when Justin finally came back to the VMA stage after 5 years.  He may have started off a bit slow but once he broke out into those dance moves we know and love the performance took off.  He finished by floating up in the air to end his performance but the part that was most memorable was after he finished his set, seeing Justin cry on stage was touching and really showed that he has come back to continue doing what he loves.

6. The biggest award for the night went to Taylor Swift for her video Bad Blood.  This shocked no one because that was by far the best video in the category.  Ending the show with Miley Cyrus singing about, what else, marijuana.  Overall the show had some pretty awesome moments but won’t go down in VMA history as anything close to 2013 twerking Miley, 2009 Kanye interrupting Taylor Swift, or the 2003 Britney and Madonna kiss.

Until next year VMA’s…

If I'm not cooking or in school I am usually binge watching Friends, Arrow, or Harry Potter. I am a Slytherin and an Alpha Phi. I believe that mermaids can exist and I would like to be the first one. I sleep with a dragon at my side named Toothless every night. If I could get paid to travel the world I would never stay in the same place longer than a month.
