5 Ways to Stay Busy in the Summer on a Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Utah chapter.

With summer just around the corner it’s hard not to get excited about all the free time you’ll have.  However, if you aren’t filling your schedule with a job or an internship it can get boring fast.  Having a few lazy days is nice but, setting some fun goals is the perfect way to beat the summer time blues and stay productive. Here are 5 ways to stay busy this summer while on a budget!

     Take a class.

You always thought it would be relaxing to take a yoga class but, during the school year you never found the time.  Summer is the perfect opportunity to sign up for that class you’ve always wanted to go to.  Grab a buddy and ditch those excuses!  Your body will thank you later!

     Theme nights.

For a fun night in with friends, host a theme night at your house.  It can be a luau themed party complete with coconut bras or a low key movie night where you dress as your favorite character.  Up the anty by giving away a special prize for the best costume!

     Become a tourist.

If you are homebound for the summer try becoming a tourist in your own town.  Search online or visit a local travel shop to get the scoop on all the fun things to do in your town.  There is always more to do in the summer and it’s the perfect time to explore different areas in your city.  You might be surprised at what you find.

     Volunteer.

It’s summer and you don’t have to worry about logging hours and choosing events that only look good on a résumé.  Do something you like such as visiting the local shelter and spend your day playing with cats and dogs.  If your friends are out of town or at work, some animal love is a nice subsitute!

     Read.

Spend some time at the library and catch up on your leisure reading.  Reread your favorite childhood books or just take a few hours to explore all the shelves. If reading isn’t your thing, the library is a good resource for finding out what local events are happening.

Bonus:  Start learning a new language.

A main reason why many people think they can’t learn a new language is because they don’t have the time.  If you find yourself with too much time on your hands and you’re up for a challenge, sign up for a class or even do it on your own through online learning tools.  You won’t regret learning that new language when your crush is totally turned on when you speak it!
