Skin Care Tips to Get You Through the Winter

When the weather changes, so does your skin. During the colder months, your skin tends to become more dry. Florida’s weather is unpredictable which may be causing your skin to go crazy. One week it’s cold and the next it feels like you’re walking in Dante’s Inferno. It is common to have to deal with combination skin with the weather fluctuating frequently. Some areas of your skin may be oily while other parts contain dry patches. If you’re living in a colder climate, you may be battling more with dry skin. Fortunately, these tips will benefit both. Being a college student can be expensive, so it is great to know that you don’t have to splurge when it comes to skincare. Below are some tips on how to keep your skin hydrated with items that you can find right in your kitchen.

Diet

The first step to flawless skin, is your diet. It is essential to start from the inside. Healthier skin calls for healthier foods. Foods such as carrots, blueberries, spinach, and salmon are great for your skin. Try to limit processed or refined carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. Whole grains are healthier and you can eat a piece of fruit when you’re craving something sweet. Of course you can still treat yourself, just make an effort to choose healthier food options most of the time.

Water, water, water!

I can’t emphasis on this enough. Water is a necessity when it comes to curing dry skin. Your skin is not going to look hydrated if you’re not. Although everyone’s body is different, the rule of thumb is to aim for 8-10 cups a day. This number may seem intimidating to those who aren’t used to consuming this much on a daily basis; however, you can start out small. You can make a goal to increase your water intake every few days. There are also goals that people like to draw on their water bottles. For instance, by 10am, your water should be sitting at this line. This often helps people to accomplish their target for the day.

Coconut Oil

You may be familiar with this ingredient when it comes to cooking, but did you know that it does wonders for your skin? If you are battling with dry patches, apply a small amount of coconut oil to the area for a deep moisturizer. A little goes a long way, so be sure not to drench yourself in it or you’ll look like a greaseball. Apply it before bedtime and sleep with it overnight; that way your skin has the chance to absorb it. Use one that is unrefined and organic for optimal results.

Sugar Scrub

When your skin is dry and flakey, it may be time to exfoliate. Exfoliating will help remove the dead debris from your skin to reveal softer, smoother skin. Mix honey and raw sugar to a 2:1 ratio. Apply the mixture to your dry face and softly scrub it, focusing more on your problem areas. Make sure not to scrub too hard or it can damage your skin, causing it to look even more dry. When you’re done scrubbing for about 20 seconds, wipe it off with a warm, wet washcloth.

After you start applying these tips, you’ll be on your way to healthy, radiant skin. Stay hydrated loves!
