Freshmen’s first steps into adulthood

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USFSP chapter.

Packing up your favorite clothes and heading to a completely new city can be stressful. You leave your friends, family and pets to start an adventure somewhere new to you with people you have never met before.

For many freshmen, the first month can be the toughest. Luckily USFSP makes this easier for students.  By throwing events each week, freshmen are able to meet people other than their roommates. Also, having a kitchen in many of the dorms gives freshmen the option to have home cooked meals, one thing that many freshmen miss the most about home.

“I really miss my mom’s cooking. I can’t cook so not having home cooked meals really sucks,” Symonne Thomas, freshman at USFSP, said.

Having friends nearby has helped many freshmen feel less homesick. Kaela Neal, freshmen living in the Hilton, says that having her best friend as a roommate has helped her miss home just a little bit less.

Transitioning from high school to college has been hard for many freshmen because of their new found independence. Time management is a necessity when your parents aren’t there to make sure you go to class and do your homework. This seems to be the hardest part for freshmen as they are adjusting to strict deadlines, a heavier workflow and distractions throughout campus. “School work requires much more time, and you have more things distracting you from it,” Kaela Neal said.
